Cryo-CLEM and in Situ Cellular Tomography Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Structural Biology team as specialist to lead and support our cryo-CLEM and in situ cellular tomography efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining eukaryotic cell culture and mastering sample preparation procedures for electron and light microscopy;
  • Overseeing and providing guidance in all aspects of cell-culture sample preparation for light and electron microscopy to lab personnel and collaborators;
  • Maintaining cell line stocks, various reagent collections and inventories for the unit;
  • Training and supervision of new lab personnel;
  • Preparing general lab reagents as pertaining to cell culture and imagining needs, ordering and stocking of lab supplies.

The successful applicant will work in a stimulating academic and cultural environment, and will have the opportunity to contribute as an author to manuscripts. The unit is equipped with cell culture, molecular biology, light and cryo-CLEM technology, as well as having access to the newly established Nanoimaging Core at Institut Pasteur, headed by Matthijn Vos. The state-of the-art core houses a 300kV Titan Krios equipped with a K3 direct electron detector and energy filter for high resolution structural studies of biological molecules in situ, 2 screening 200 kV Glacios electron microscopes, as well as one Aquilos and all required ancillary equipment for cellular cryo-ET sample preparation.

Required Experience

  • Strong hands-on expertise in microscopy, immuno-staining techniques, specimen preparation for light and electron microscopy, and sample evaluation;
  • Strong hands-on expertise in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and antibody assays;
  • Strong hands-on expertise in tissue culture;
  • Hands-on experience in operation of electron cryo TEMs a plus;
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science, chemistry, physics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained;
  • Requires a minimum of 7+ years of directly related experience to eukaryotic cell culture protocols and sample preparation procedures for electron and light microscopy;
  • For candidates with a master’s degree, a minimum of 5+ years is required.

Required Skills

  • The ability to independently characterize and troubleshoot eukaryotic cell sample preparations for light and fluorescence microscopy;
  • The ability to rapidly learn new research assays and process the obtained data;
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment;
  • The ability to manage multiple projects in a rapidly changing, deadline-driven environment;
  • Strong analytical, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent verbal/written English communication and skills.
