Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory of Particle Accelerator Physics

Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory of Particle Accelerator Physics

EPFL - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne

Lausanne, Switzerland

Your mission:

The EPFL Laboratory of Particle Accelerator Physics (LPAP) is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to strengthen our interdisciplinary team focusing on the development of an innovative simulation framework for the design of Future Circular Colliders (FCC).

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Improve the modeling of the electron cloud formation based on the current state of knowledge, originating from both laboratory and the Large Hadron Collider experience. Validate the existing numerical tools for electron cloud build-up based on the unique LHC RUN3 data set;
  • By using the results of the modelling, propose modifications for the design of the vacuum chambers of the FCC in terms of shape, material, coating or surface treatment;
  • Contribute to the development of a framework for comprehensive beam dynamics simulations on the combined effect of persisting electron cloud, beam-beam and impedance aiming at the prediction of stability limits and beam lifetime evolution during collisions;
  • Contribute to an overall optimized design of FCC in terms of physics reach and performance;
  • Participate in the writing of articles and conference presentations, related to the research activities;
  • Participate in the teaching activities of the laboratory.

Your profile:

  • Applicants should have completed their Ph.D.;
  • We expect a strong scientific background and proven track record in accelerator physics, physics-based simulations, numerical optimization and computational design;
  • Experience with modular and collaborative scientific software design and with existing accelerator related software packages, for example PyHeadTail, COMBI, Sixtrack, MADX and other tools related to studies of collective effects;
  • Excellent communication skills in English and good team spirit.
