The Human Technopole Foundation is looking for a Senior technology development expert of custom microscopy services in the Light Imaging facility (LIF).

The person, reporting to the Head of the Light Imaging Facility, will be responsible for supporting research groups with microscope customization and technology development. The role will provide HT scientists with access to required light imaging setups that are not yet commercially available and will contribute to establishing, maintaining, and constantly evolving bespoke services for research support and development in light imaging.

LIF will be a state-of-the-art-facility that plans to attract the best talent and harness a broad range of advanced imaging instrumentation to provide cornerstone support to the scientific vision of Human Technopole. It will be fully integrated within an outstanding research environment, including transformative facilities for image analysis, stem cell and organoid automation, (cryo-) electron microscopy and CLEM, leading edge genomics and animal research infrastructures. The facilities will have full access to a powerful, state-of-the-art, and centrally administered high performance computing (HPC) cluster, designed to meet the needs of microscopy, computational biology, and data science.

Main responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate technology development projects in collaboration with the research groups, such as instruments customization and adaptation of commercial microscopes to the specific needs of the researchers;
  • Establish world-class bespoke services in the Light Imaging Facility operating over the full span covered by light microscopy and supporting a wide range of experiments from super resolution to high throughput pipelines;
  • Maintenance and daily operation of the customized microscopes and related set-ups;
  • User (internal and external) consultation, training and ad-hoc assistance for access to customized instruments;
  • Project-based user support in sample preparation and image acquisition;
  • Participate in organizing workshops for internal and external scientists;
  • Scout for new promising technologies, continuously enhancing the portfolio of the facility;
  • Interact closely with scientists on all aspects of the imaging acquisition;
  • Establish synergies with the other HT facilities;
  • Participate in facility reviews by external experts;
  • Build effective links and collaborations within HT.

Job requirements

  • Previous experience as Senior Manager, or Staff Scientist, or Facility Head, with project management duties;
  • Proven experience as a staff member of a light microscopy facility applied to the life sciences;
  • Strong knowledge of optical physics, and preferentially additional knowledge of biology, image analysis and computer vision;
  • Track record in technology development, microscopy customization and optimization;
  • Knowledge of best practices for effective data management;
  • Fluency in English - HT is an international research institute;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and to work independently;
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to lead and gain the assistance and cooperation of others in a team endeavor;
  • Ability to build trust through operating with transparency and creating an open and positive environment;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
