Researcher in Nanocomposite Design for Material Preservation

Researcher in Nanocomposite Design for Material Preservation

IIT - Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia

Venice, Italy

The Centre for Cultural Heritage Technology (CCHT@Ca’Foscari) in Venice of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is currently seeking to appoint one Researcher with proven experience in Material Science and experimental background in development of polymeric nanocomposite coatings. Additional expertise on green chemistry procedures for the preparation of green-derived materials will be considered as a plus. The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists focused on Cultural Heritage safeguard and protection working on understanding the physico-chemical properties of the investigated materials and the development of appropriate strategies for their preservation and conservation. The CCHT focuses on promoting new technologies and approaches for analysis and preservation of Cultural Heritage. A strongly interdisciplinarity-oriented infrastructure, the Centre combines expertise from conservation and computing sciences domains, integrating these competencies to foster cutting-edge research.

The candidate will oversee PD researchers and PhDs working on characterisation of CH assets and on the development of polymeric nano-micro/composite materials to be applied as protective coatings to heritage objects (including glass, metal and ceramic items, manuscripts, textiles, paintings and sculptures etc). Sensing technologies might also be developed and integrated in the protective layers in order to monitor the state of the degradation of heritage items.

Strongly motivated, the ideal candidate will contribute to the establishment of CCHT as a leading global centre in the domain of conservation of Cultural heritage and to the expansion of the Centre itself.

Required qualifications for the candidate:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or relevant;
  • At least 5 years of postdoc experience;
  • Proven experience in nanomaterials and polymer nanocomposites synthesis and processing;
  • Background in material characterization by means of manifold instruments (including the use of microscopy, spectroscopy, surface and thermomechanical techniques);
  • Excellent track record of research publications;
  • Experience in grant proposal preparation at European and National level;
  • Proficient in English language (written and oral);
  • Ability to work as part of a team or network.

Desirable skills:

  • Background or experience in Cultural Heritage diagnostic and characterisation;
  • Demonstrated interest in the domain of Cultural Heritage;
  • Experience in supervising or co-supervising Ph.D. students or postdocs;
  • Broad range of contacts within international research community.
