Daido Metal Co. Ltd. European Technical Centre (UK), based in Ilminster, Somerset, undertakes materials research and technology development activities relating to engine tribology. As a company, we aim to achieve significant growth backed by our technology and the specialist knowledge and expertise of our workforce.

Permanent or Temporary: Initially on an 18-month contract with potential to become permanent after 12months.
Hours of work: 8.00am – 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday, 8.00am – 1.20pm Friday. 37.50 hours/week. Additional hours, including some weekend travel may be required to fully meet the responsibilities of this position.
Location: Our principal location is based at Ilminster, Somerset.
Pay range: £28k-£37k depends on qualification, skill and experiences. Pay frequency is on a monthly basis.

Core purpose of job role:

To identify, evaluate and assess new and emerging technologies to support future business growth.

Key tasks & Responsibilities:

  • To identify disruptive materials/tribology technologies that will potentially reshape the industry and business landscape in next three to ten years;
  • To work closely with mirror research group at head office in Japan in the areas of technical interest, covering different engine sectors including automotive, large-bore and renewable energy;
  • To respond directly to specific technology development requests from technical teams within company global group, assess available technologies and organize initial evaluation and transfer;
  • To analyze existing proprietary (IP) and scientific publication, estimate the current status of various emerging technology development;
  • To identify and attend key technology events in engine/materials/tribology fields. Generate written reports on regular basis for distribution throughout the organization, including presenting finding at meetings with colleagues in Japan and UK;
  • To participate UK/EU public funding program with University, when opportunity comes up, on various early stage technology research scheme;
  • To support other development projects within the R&D department when required.

Specific criteria required for this position:

  • Hold a Ph.D. degree within one of the following disciplines: Materials, Metallurgy, Tribology, Surface Engineering or other relevant engineering disciplines;
  • Relevant experiences in the field of material research at TRL1-3 level;
  • A curiosity and passion for emerging technologies with a keen ability to spot patterns ahead of the curve with creative thinking;
  • Ability to balance enthusiasm with critical analysis, bringing both to the table;
  • Familiar with modern material analytical and characterization technique, method and equipment;
  • Excellent communication, presentation and technical report writing skills, attention to details;
  • You will be a self-motivated, well organised individual with the ability to work well in a team or as an individual;
  • The ability to travel from time to time, ideally holding a full driving license;
  • German language skill will be a plus but not essential.
