TUHH - Hamburg University of Technology - Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics

Hamburg, Germany

At the Institute of of Geo-Hydroinformatics, we are interested in tackling global challenges concerning water, soil, and the environment. We are passionate about creating new knowledge through research and innovation, especially in the development of innovative measurement tools and predictive capabilities that harness the strengths of sensing technologies and big data analytics. We aim to provide accurate and quantitative insights into multiscale and multiphase ecohydrological processes occurring near the Earth's surface. For this, we combine theory, state-of-art modelling and experiments using cutting-edge tools such as high-resolution imaging, satellite remote sensing, artificial intelligence, big data processing, and computational fluid dynamics.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct innovative research and experiments for a 3-year project that aims to quantify the evaporative loss from global fluvial network. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory experiments and field measurements, and develop physically-based models to quantify evaporation and energy partitioning dynamics from rivers and streams.

YOUR TASKS

  • Designing and conducting independent and multiscale research including laboratory experiments, modelling, field measurements and data analytics;
  • Developing a physically-based model to quantify evaporation and energy balance in river reaches;
  • Publishing in peer-reviewed journals and attending scientific meetings and conferences;
  • Helping with supervision of MSc students and other institute related tasks if deemed necessary by the Head of the Institute.

YOUR PROFILE

  • PhD degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, hydrology, fluid mechanics, hydraulics or related disciplines;
  • Independence in setting up laboratory experiments, field measurements and data analytics;
  • Demonstrated experience with experimental research in the field of fluid mechanics and hydraulics;
  • Experience with big data analysis and machine learning approaches will be an advantage;
  • Outstanding academic results and recognitions;
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral/written);
  • Strong interests, motivation and commitment to research and development;
  • Interest in international exchanges, teamwork and collaboration.
