About the team/job

Make your mark as a transatlantic scientist!

The EMBL Stanford Life Science Alliance invites researchers to submit an application to the Bridging Excellence Postdoctoral Program. With a network of over 50 labs from across EMBL and Stanford University, we believe in working together to leverage the know-how, technologies and opportunities at both leading institutions to accelerate biological research.

Our Bridging Excellence Fellowships support ambitious and creative joint projects between EMBL and Stanford University, defined by postdoctoral applicants. The fellowships provide funding for a 3-year stipend. Postdocs can choose either EMBL or at Stanford University as the host institution for the duration of their fellowship. During the three-year fellowship, postdocs spend up to one year visiting the partner institution (i.e. 3 years at the host lab Stanford, of which up to 1 year is spent visiting the partner lab EMBL or vice versa). The fellowships include a contribution towards lab consumables, a generous travel and accommodation supplement for visiting your collaborators lab, and funds for presenting your project at an international conference.

Your role

We invite all eligible researchers to submit a proposal describing a collaboration between at least one lab at EMBL and one faculty member from Stanford University (specifically in the School of Medicine or School of Humanities & Sciences). This collaboration should build on the strengths of the partner laboratories, as well as your own expertise. Fellowships will be awarded to researchers, who take up a position as a postdoctoral fellow at EMBL or at Stanford University for 3 years. During this time, fellows will spend up to one year visiting their collaborators at the partner institution to work on the joint research project (multiple visits totalling 1 year are permitted). In addition to benefitting from the mentorship from two expert supervisors, fellows will also be able to take advantage of postdoctoral training opportunities from both institutions.

Researchers who want to bridge two leading research institutions, work with cutting-edge technology, and develop their international profile are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be prepared to be internationally mobile and be excited by the prospect of being an ambassador for transatlantic science.

You have

We invite applications in all fields, from any eligible researcher regardless of nationality, gender, or scientific background. Please read the applicant guideline provided on our website for full eligibility criteria.

Why join us

Both EMBL and Stanford University are inclusive, equal opportunity employers offering attractive conditions and benefits with a very collegial and family friendly working environment.

The fellows will have access to standard training opportunities, and any administrative support throughout the fellowship - i.e. fellows receive the same entitlements and treatment as other fellows at the institutions.

What else you need to know

Please download the application form and submit the final PDF, along with the completed letter of support from your chosen project supervisors by 8th of March 2024 at 11:59 CET. Applications must be submitted using the form provided on our website. Applications that are not submitted using the form provided, or outside of this system will not be reviewed.

You will also be asked to provide the contact details of two referees who will be emailed automatically once you submit your application. The deadline for letters of recommendation is the 22nd of March 2024. It is the fellows responsibility to ensure that referees upload their references by this date.
