Post Summary

Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin is seeking to appoint a Professor of Mathematics. The successful candidate will be an experienced academic with an ongoing programme of scholarly activity and with a proven international track record in research, teaching and academic leadership. This position provides an opportunity to contribute to the research and teaching missions of the School and the appointee will be expected to participate at all levels of teaching and supervision undertaken by the School. As a senior academic in the discipline, a Chair holder is expected to take a significant leadership role in the School and to help drive and shape the strategic development of the discipline locally, nationally and internationally.

The Post Holder

The Professor of Mathematics will be required to undertake innovative and impactful research, to develop a high profile in the national and international research communities and to demonstrate the potential to attract external research funding. They will assist in the delivery and development of the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and supervise research students. The appointee will have excellent organisational skills and will have the ability to work both independently as well as part of a team. The successful candidate will be expected to engage and be part of the School’s senior management team and to undertake administrative roles as directed by the Head of School.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have a PhD in Mathematics or related discipline.

Knowledge & Experience

Teaching:

Essential

  • Experience in teaching at undergraduate levels as well as experience of research supervision (at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level);
  • Evidence of a personal contribution and commitment to excellence in teaching;
  • Experience of working collaboratively and effectively in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • Proven experience of organising and facilitating seminars, workshops etc.;
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching, employing innovative approaches to learning and teaching;
  • A collaborative leadership and working style, with openness to collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines;
  • A commitment to scholarship;
  • A commitment to student care.

Desirable

  • Experience of using new and varied teaching media;
  • Knowledge of recent developments and research in the discipline of Mathematics.

Research:

Essential

  • International standing and recognised excellence as a leader in research and scholarship;
  • Proven publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed journals together with potential for a substantial publication record in the medium term;
  • Proven ability or evident potential to attract external research funding;
  • Evidence of significant achievement in and commitment to excellence in research-led teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Potential to contribute to the development of the subject area with demonstrated vision and commitment;
  • Experience of working collaboratively and effectively in an interdisciplinary environment.

Administration:

Essential

  • Ability to engage in the administrative requirements of the School and the College;
  • Proven experience in designing, planning and implementing academic programmes in a university setting;
  • Experience of organising research seminars and other similar activities;
  • Experience of project management.

Desirable

  • Evidence of contribution to outreach activities.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team;
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues at an interdisciplinary level, and to represent the discipline at School, Faculty and University level;
