HT - Human Technopole

Research Technician - Pinheiro Lab

HT - Human Technopole

Milan, Italy

Job description

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: December 14th, 2022

Human Technopole (HT) is a new interdisciplinary life science research institute created and supported by the Italian government to develop innovative strategies to improve human health. HT comprises five centers: Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, Neurogenomics, and Health Data Science. The Centers work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.

The Pinheiro Lab in the Centre for Computational Biology at Human Technopole is looking for a Research Technician. The Lab combines theoretical and experimental research to develop a predictive framework for evolutionary processes under ecological complexity. A main theme of the group is the evolution of antibiotic resistance. To address this problem, the Pinheiro Lab will establish a strong dialog between theory and experiments, using theoretical models to inform experimental design and experiments to validate theoretical hypotheses.

The Research Technician will work on different experimental projects the team is involved in, focusing on developing small-scale bacterial culture workflows with a fermenter/bioreactor. The successful candidate will have a strong background in microbiology and will also be experienced in coordinating different projects and supervising other experimental posts.

Importantly, the lab benefits from the experimental and computational infrastructure provided by HT, which involves multiple posts in core bioinformatics units, as well as a team of core wet-lab scientists within the Centre for Computational Biology, exclusively dedicated to generating novel datasets, ranging from single-cell genomics, multi-omics, and spatial tumour profiling. The lab is also supported by the HT High-Throughput Genomics Facility, which generates genomics data, and by the HT Computational Genomics Facility, which provides analysis support with established pipelines. State-of-the-art High-Performance Computing infrastructure and Data Storage support all the computational needs of HT.

The successful candidate will report directly to Dr. Fernanda Pinheiro and will work in close collaboration with members of her team.

(S)He will have the following main responsibilities:

  • Support the infrastructure and workflows of the laboratory of Dr. Fernanda Pinheiro at Human Technopole (see https://humantechnopole.it/en/research-groups/pinheiro-group/);
  • Conduct experiments in the area of microbiology, with a strong emphasis on bacterial culture pipelines (continuous and batch cultures);
  • Routinely run complete bacterial culture workflows (with flask and fermenter/bioreactor);
  • Actively participate in resource planning and maintenance of the lab’s equipment;
  • Perform genomics sample preparation and standard molecular biology tasks (e.g., molecular cloning, western blotting);
  • Lab management and organization (e.g., managing inventories, materials, reagents, equipment and stocks of samples);
  • Create and implement new tools, methods and protocols;
  • Generate reliable publication data for the projects assigned, maintain accurate records of laboratory work, and record all data and results in specified forms;
  • Provide technical support and supervision to other laboratory members, including introduction and teaching of new laboratory techniques and support on the use of lab equipment to lab members.

Job requirements

Essential requirements:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant subject, e.g., molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or in a related field of the life sciences. A PhD degree is considered an advantage but is not strictly required;
  • Documented hands-on experience in bacterial cell culture, including experience with fermenters/bioreactors. Experience with chemostat cultures is considered a plus;
  • Extensive experience in wet lab experiments, with key responsibilities in lab management;
  • Independence in performing microbial growth experiments and standard molecular biology tasks;
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute.

Additional requirements:

  • Considerable experience in laboratories involved in the areas of main responsibilities;
  • Basic bioinformatics knowledge is appreciated but not required;
  • Experience with handling large-scale project would be considered advantageous;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating by the ability to lead and gain the assistance and cooperation of others in a team endeavor;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and to work independently.
