We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher who will work at the PSICHE beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL (Saint-Aubin, Paris area, France), under the supervision of the beamline scientist responsible for the tomography activities (Dr. Andrew King), and in collaboration with academic and industrial user groups.
You will be involved in the operation of the beamline, and will participate in supporting external user tomography and imaging experiments (both academic and industrial) in order to meet the anticipated increased demand. This involves both operating the beamline, and working with the resulting data.
You may propose their own research topic compatible with the techniques proposed by the beam line, and the scientific themes addressed.
You will participate in the on-going commissioning of the UToPEC high pressure tomography experiment. In particular, we plan to develop the study of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as applied to materials produced by additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing (“3D printing”) is a rapidly growing technique because of its flexibility and ability to produce complex 3D geometries that would be difficult or impossible via conventional means. The parts produced in this way often contain defects related to the manufacturing route (cracks, pores, inclusions, etc.). To improve their mechanical properties, HIP can be used to densify the microstructure, eliminating most defects. The conditions of temperature and pressure required (e.g. 100 MPa and 500C for aluminium) can be easily reached in the UToPEC press, and are therefore compatible with time-resolved in-situ tomography. We propose to use this technique to follow the evolution of defects in-situ, with the aim of optimising the conditions, and of characterising the kinetics of the processes involved. Diffraction will be used to measure the pressure and temperature, but also to follow the evolution of grain sizes, and potentially phase transitions during processing.
You will present the scientific results obtained at PSICHE in national and international conferences.
