Researcher – Photonic Devices

Researcher – Photonic Devices

Tyndall National Institute

Dublin, Ireland

Tyndall National Institute at University College, Cork invites applications for positions of postdoctoral researcher in photonic devices. The successful candidate will join the Photonics Centre at Tyndall to work within the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) on the development of photonic devices based on InP and GaAs for use in sensing applications. The researchers will be involved in aspects of the design, development, fabrication, integration, characterisation and application of the devices. They will collaborate with many other researchers at Tyndall with the goal to commercialise the results.

Particularly, we seek an electronics engineer to develop hardware and software supporting the operation of linear photo-detector arrays. High performance photo-detector arrays have been developed. Linear arrays of detectors will now be integrated with required hardware/software as demonstrators. These demonstrators will initially be PCB based digital circuits and will then progressing to full integration with Read-Out Integrated Circuits (ROICs). We also seek a researcher to perform characterisation and analysis of devices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop low-noise, long-wavelength photodetectors;
  • Evaluation of different methods of reading out data from linear photo-detector arrays, i.e. analog and digital;
  • Design and implementation of electronic circuits and software for the reading of linear photo-detector arrays;
  • Control of Read Out IC to demonstrate proper signalling;
  • Evaluation of noise characteristics and performance of photo-detectors;
  • Characterise and optimise long-wavelength photodetectors;
  • Analyse results and prepare technical reports;
  • Benchmark the technology and engage with potential end users;
  • Assist in the planning, organising, conducting, and communicating the research results at conferences and in scientific articles;
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities in order to develop research skills and competencies e.g. proposal planning and grant writing;
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required;
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system;
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards;
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • Previous experience and knowledge of the design and characterisation of photonic or electronic devices is necessary;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • It is expected that the candidate will be achievement-orientated with high levels of initiative.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience in photonic applications;
  • Interest in commercialisation.
