Leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonotic disease of increasing public health concern, a situation further exacerbated by climate change. Leptospira interrogans, the causative agent of leptospirosis, offers an excellent model for studying the mechanisms underlying host adaptation and zoonotic emergence. Virtually all mammalian species can act as reservoirs for this pathogen, with individual serovars exhibiting adaptation to specific host reservoirs. Among pathogenic Leptospira, strains of the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup are associated with the most severe and frequently fatal clinical outcomes. However, the bacterial determinants underlying this increased virulence remain poorly understood. Through an integrated approach, this project will not only reveal fundamental mechanisms of host specialization, but will also provide a comprehensive effort to elucidate the exceptional virulence of Icterohaemorrhagiae strains.
You’ll work closely with other collaborative teams, bridging the gap between cell biology, genomics and pathogenesis. With your expertise in cell biology (cell culture of human primary cells), you will characterize the mechanisms of host-adaptation of pathogenic Leptospira.
An expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, transcriptomic and genomic analysis, imaging and/or infectious models will be appreciated.
