Principal Investigator in IONICS and IONTRONIC Devices

We are looking for a Principal Investigator with in-depth and hands-on expertise in the field of IONICS, including the manipulation of the electrical double layer (EDL) for capacitors, ion-gated transistors, sensors, in combination with semiconductors or thin-film ion-insertion materials. Applications with experience in solid-state IONTRONIC devices in a semiconductor relevant environment are encouraged. Candidates should have a proven track record of innovative projects.

What you will do

The selected candidate will use their skills and experience to drive the IONICS expertise domain within the Lab, Exploratory Device and new Materials (LEAN) expertise center in imec, Leuven. Together with the LEAN scientific leadership, you will identify emerging research topics of strategic importance and build roadmaps towards achieving them.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the team with scientific, technical and hands-on expertise to progress the research on EDL-based concepts, such on-chip solid-state capacitors and ion-gated transistors, as well as on our R&D involving ion-insertion materials for sensing and electronic components;
  • Making the bridge across groups and departments; you are the scientific spokesperson for the IONICS expertise domain in various fora and create opportunities for collaboration;
  • Together with the teams, you plan and systematically follow-up on longer term projects, such as customer projects, funded projects, and internal improvement projects;
  • Using your applied or industrial background, you support the teams with setting up efficient processes and working protocols, whilst considering future FAB compatibility;
  • You secure public funding seeking collaboration with top consortia;
  • You stay abreast of new developments and technologies in the field IONICS and IONTRONIC devices, and you are responsible for distributing the knowledge to the relevant stakeholders and for translating the research needs into roadmaps;
  • You set up and maintain university collaborations, accommodate internships and PhD student;
  • You promote a culture of publications in high-impact journals, at conferences and technical seminars, and are responsible for timely patenting.

Who you are

  • You have at least 5 years post-PhD experience with a proven track record in innovative research in the field of IONICS and solid-state IONTRONIC devices;
  • You have a PhD in Sciences or Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, Materials science or equivalent;
  • You have a strong technical, hands-on & scientific background;
  • You have a good understanding of IONICS challenges in advanced semiconductor technology, ideally combined with experience in processing and device integration;
  • You have experience in project management and guiding researchers and PhD students;
  • You have a relevant network, are experienced in proposal writing and have demonstrated acquiring substantial project funding;
  • You have experience working with internal and external customers;
  • You are a team player and flexible in accommodating changing priorities to support business needs;
  • You have self-drive and are willing to take ownership;
  • You feel at home and know how to integrate into a multicultural environment;
  • You have outstanding English communication skills to work successfully in an international dynamic team environment.
