Marine Data Manager

VLIZ is hiring, for immediate employment, a data manager to support the MarineLife+ team, with a strong focus on data and project management within EMODnet Biology and closely related projects. The work involves e.g. maintaining and updating data management plans, supporting data partners and providers in adhering to good data management practices, provide online and on-site data training, oversee, guide and improve general and specific external and internal data flows into the VLIZ data systems.

YOUR TASKS

  • Take an active role in the day-to-day data management activities of the Data Management Team, in relation with EMODnet Biology;
  • Quality control, process and make available different types of marine data, with a focus on biodiversity data;
  • Document your work, used processes and decision-making in a detailed manner;
  • Actively promote the biodiversity systems hosted and managed at VLIZ within the marine community through different channels;
  • Share your acquired experiences with your team members, thereby assisting them in improving specific data flows and optimizing training material;
  • Participate in project and system meetings and follow-up on milestones and deliverables;
  • Provide general and specific data management support to project partners within EU-funded projects, both written and oral, e.g. through (online) training;
  • For each function, VLIZ considers enthusiastic involvement, service minded, excellent professionalism and integrity as important characteristics.

YOUR PROFILE

  • You hold a BSc or MSc degree in marine sciences, bioinformatics or equivalent;
  • You have working knowledge with R and/or Python;
  • You have knowledge of or experience with relational databases is highly valued;
  • No previous work experience required. A strong interest in data management in general is a must;
  • You have proficient and effective oral and written communication skills in English;
  • You are curious, eager to learn and you have good interpersonal skills;
  • You have a strong interest in (marine) biodiversity data management;
  • You have the ability to work both independently and in team, and take ownership of assigned tasks;
  • You are willing to work in a European context.
