Postdoctoral Researcher in Human Liver Biology and Organoid-based Disease Models

SDU - University of Southern Denmark

Odense, Denmark

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a three-year postdoctoral position within the FibroLiver project.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in human liver biology who is eager to work at the interface between advanced tissue engineering, stem cell biology, complex multicellular systems, and translational disease research.

The position offers the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary consortium spanning academia and industry, bringing together expertise in hepatology, pharmacology, immunology, and biotechnology.

The project integrates expertise in liver biology, disease modelling, quantitative omics, and advanced experimental platforms, including automated organoid culture systems, AI-assisted organoid sorting, and volumetric 3D bioprinting.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in developing and applying human liver organoid systems to study cellular interactions that drive tissue remodelling and influence responses to therapeutic interventions. The work will involve biological characterisation of these models and investigation of inflammatory signalling and extracellular matrix dynamics.

The ideal candidate has the following competencies and skills:

  • A PhD in biomedicine, or a related discipline such as biochemistry, molecular biology, medicine, cell biology, immunology, or a closely related biomedical field;
  • Strong interest in human liver biology and mechanisms of liver disease;
  • Experience working with experimental biological model systems relevant to biomedical research;
  • Ability to design and conduct complex experiments;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in English for effective teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment.

Additional valuable skills:

  • Experience with stem cell biology or organoid systems;
  • Experience with functional phenotyping;
  • Familiarity with omics-based approaches such as proteomics or transcriptomics;
  • Interest in quantitative or systems-level approaches to complex biological questions.
