Upstream Processing Scientist
Formo Bio
Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Role Overview
We are looking for an Upstream Processing Scientist to support pilot-scale upstream operations and technology transfer to external manufacturing partners. The role focuses on hands-on 100L bioprocessing, scale-up readiness, and successful transfer of upstream processes to CMOs/CDMOs.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute and lead upstream bioprocess operations at the 100L pilot-plant scale, including setup, operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting;
- Design and run pilot-scale experiments to support scale-up, process characterization, and transfer readiness;
- Identify and mitigate scale-up and transfer risks related to process parameters, equipment, and raw materials;
- Prepare and maintain upstream process and technology transfer documentation (e.g., process descriptions, batch records, SOPs, protocols, and reports);
- Support technology transfer activities with CMOs/CDMOs, including remote or on-site technical support during engineering or GMP runs;
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical progress and risks.
About You
- M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical/Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field;
- 2+ years of hands-on upstream bioprocess experience at pilot scale (>10L; 100L preferred);
- Experience with microbial or mammalian upstream processes;
- Prior involvement in process or technology transfer to CMOs/CDMOs is strongly preferred;
- Strong technical documentation, hands-on mentality and excellent communication skills;
- Experience with ELNs and process risk assessments is a plus;
- Adaptability, and consistent drive for process excellence;
- Willingness to travel to support external manufacturing partners when required.
