Staff Scientist - Thin Films and Nanomechanics

Staff Scientist - Thin Films and Nanomechanics

IMDEA Materials Institute

Madrid, Spain

Description

IMDEA Materials Institute is seeking a Staff Scientist to reinforce and expand our Thin Films and Nanomechanics research activities. The successful candidate will lead cutting‑edge investigations into thin‑film deposition, advanced micro‑ and nanoscale mechanical characterization, and the mechanical behavior of coatings and architected materials. Working at the forefront of nanoindentation (including high‑temperature and in‑situ methodologies), AFM‑based nanomechanics, and physical vapor deposition (PVD/magnetron sputtering), the selected scientist will play a key role in driving innovation, enhancing our experimental capabilities, and fostering impactful collaborations across the institute and with external partners.

Requirements

  • PhD in Materials Science or related discipline.
  • More than ten years of experience in roles of similar scientific scope and responsibility.
  • Demonstrated research track record in thin films and coatings, as well as in micro‑ and nanomechanical testing techniques (e.g., nanoindentation, AFM‑based nanomechanics, FIB‑fabricated specimens, and in‑situ mechanical testing), supported by high‑quality publications and/or patents.
  • Hands‑on expertise in physical vapor deposition (PVD/magnetron sputtering) or comparable thin‑film synthesis methods, alongside strong experience in microstructural characterization (SEM/FIB, TEM, XRD) and advanced data analysis.
  • Proven experience in coordinating and managing laboratory facilities, including instrumentation oversight, method development, or laboratory operations.
  • Strong academic credentials, evidenced by publications and, ideally, invited or keynote presentations at international conferences.
  • Ability to work effectively in an academic, international, and multidisciplinary environment, as well as to supervise and mentor bachelor’s, master’s, and/or doctoral students.
  • Participation in competitive research projects, particularly with experience as Principal Investigator, is highly valued.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential.
