Postdoc in Remote Sensing Image Analysis Studying Greenland Darkening

EPFL - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne

Sion, Switzerland

Mission

You will work in the framework of the project GreenLight (Shedding light on the darkening of the Greenland Ice Sheet: From microbes to ice melt and potential solutions), at the interface between microbiology, glaciology and Earth observation. You will pursue research on the understanding of the darkening of the Greenland ice sheet and its connection to microbiological processes. Your task will be to connect unique in-situ observations and spectroscopy data to large scale aerial and satellite imaging. To do so, you will develop innovative deep learning models. This will involve the establishment of large-scale mapping and monitoring models, as well as exploring their predictive power, and interpretability.

You will further participate in the educational activities of the group and the supervision of doctoral students.

We look for a scientist with strong knowledge multi- and hyperspectral remote sensing in the development of advanced machine learning algorithms such as convolutional neural networks and transformers. Experience in glaciology is also required (fieldwork experience is a plus).

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Establishment of an innovative research line involving Earth observation and remote sensing for studying the Greenlandic ice sheet darkening;
  • Co-development of courses in remote sensing and machine learning at master and doctoral level;
  • Supervision of MSc and PhD students of the ECEO laboratory;
  • Participation in ongoing projects of the ECEO laboratory. Participation in proposals writing.

Profile

  • PhD in computer science and/or glaciology;
  • Proficiency in Python programming and deep learning at developer level;
  • Knowledge of remote sensing image analysis tools (e.g., processing in Google Earth Engine or similar) and data science;
  • Spoken/written proficiency in English;
  • You are motivated, curious and willing to work in a highly dynamic team.
