Applied Physicist - LHCb Calorimeter Upgrade
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research
Geneva, Switzerland
What you'll do
As an applied physicist, you will be part of the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) upgrade project. This includes the optimisation, construction, commissioning and operation of novel modules for the inner region based on Spaghetti Calorimeter (SpaCal) technology.
Your responsibilities
- Take a leading role in the enhancement of the LHCb ECAL during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) with new modules using SpaCal technology;
- Develop and participate hands-on in quality assurance activities for the ECAL LS3 enhancement;
- Optimise the signal shaping for the new SpaCal modules in collaboration with the electronics experts;
- Organise the test beam effort, including the data analysis, within the LHCb ECAL upgrade project and coordinate the test beam activities within the LHCb collaboration;
- Participate actively in the R&D on scintillating materials towards the LHCb PicoCal (LS4) and for future particle physics experiments.
Your profile
- Proven track record in the field of optical calorimetry for particle physics experiments;
- Demonstrated experience in calorimeter detector tests, including data analysis from beam tests;
- Experience in simulations and optimisation of calorimeter detector designs;
- Demonstrated experience in characterisation of organic and inorganic scintillators;
- Understanding of signal treatment for optical calorimetry;
- Management and coordination of teams, including student supervision;
- PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics or a related field.
Your skills
- Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors;
- Analysis and optimisation of detector performance;
- Knowledge and application of calorimetry methods and techniques;
- Organisation, planning and control: including supervision of students;
- Has a structured and organised approach towards work; is able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind;
- Builds and maintains constructive and effective work relationships. Takes initiative beyond regular tasks and makes things happen;
- Readily absorbs new techniques and working practices; proposes new or improved ways of working. Presents information accurately and objectively;
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
