Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics

Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics

University of Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä, Finland

The researcher will join the Exotic Nuclei and Beams (IGISOL) team at the University of Jyväskylä. The group investigates properties of atomic nuclei by employing high-precision mass spectrometry as well as laser and decay spectroscopy at the IGISOL facility in the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory. We also have strong connections to other international accelerator facilities, such as GSI-FAIR and CERN. Combined with the nuclear theory group led by Prof. Markus Kortelainen at the University of Jyväskylä, and the Centre of Excellence collaboration teams, we are in a unique position to explore nuclear data and their impact on neutron-star physics.

Who we are looking for

The successful candidate will significantly contribute to cutting-edge experiments in nuclear astrophysics, in particular mass measurements and complementary spectroscopic studies in JYFL-ACCLAB and at international facilities.

Qualifications

  • You have, or are just about to have, a Ph.D. degree in nuclear physics or related field;
  • You have a strong background in nuclear astrophysics/nuclear physics experiments;
  • Proficiency in computational methods and programming (e.g., C++, Python,..);
  • You are interested in research and eagerly pursuing an academic career;
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  • You are ready to work in an international research team and collaborate nationally with the Centre of Excellence hubs (Helsinki-Jyväskylä-Turku) as well as internationally with our collaborators.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience from high-precision mass spectrometry with a Penning trap or a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer;
  • Familiarity with the astrophysical rp and r processes;
  • Familiarity with neutron-star physics and astrophysical simulations.
