Accelerator Physicist
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research
Geneva, Switzerland
What you'll do
You will engage in the design and specification of beam transfer systems across CERN’s accelerator complex, following the systems from initial concept to beam commissioning and operational deployment. An intrinsic part of your work will be to carry out the R&D needed to understand the performance of existing beam transfer systems and to propose improvements or upgrades needed to meet the future needs of CERN’s ambitious research programme.
Your responsibilities
- Design and specify beam transfer systems (injection, extraction, primary beamlines/transfer lines) in collaboration with internal and external partners, including drafting technical and functional requirements;
- Develop and perform beam dynamics simulations including advanced ML/AI-based models to analyse, predict, and optimise system behaviour and performance;
- Conduct R&D to improve system performance and reliability, including planning and coordinating machine development studies to validate new concepts;
- Commission beam transfer systems with particle beams, diagnose operational issues, and propose solutions to maintain or enhance performance;
- Communicate results through peer-reviewed publications, conference contributions, and clear presentations tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences;
- Supervise students and coordinate postdoctoral research contributions to beam transfer studies and R&D activities.
Your profile
- Experience in accelerator physics, including beam dynamics and modelling with simulation tools;
- Practical experience at accelerator facilities with machine development studies, beam commissioning and operational support;
- Ability to analyse complex technical problems, evaluate system performance, and develop data-driven solutions;
- Demonstrated expertise in developing robust software for simulation, data analysis, and/or automation with the application of Machine Learning, AI, and/or advanced optimisation techniques;
- Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics, Applied Physics or a related field.
Your skills
- Knowledge and application of accelerator physics theory;
- Knowledge and application of beam injection and extraction methods, beam transfer and dumping;
- Simulation, design and development of primary and secondary beam lines;
- Analysis and optimisation of accelerator performance, including application of machine learning and AI concepts;
- Knowledge of identification and selection of relevant emerging accelerator technologies;
- Takes responsibility for own actions and decisions;
- Remains objective, focused and productive in a stressful environment; focuses on solutions rather than problems;
- Is willing to work on different projects simultaneously;
- Shares knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaches others to ensure knowledge transfer;
- Delivers presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusts style and content to the audience; responds calmly and confidently to questions;
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
