Post-Doc in the Area of Dynamic Networks

Empa - Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology

St. Gallen, Switzerland

The position will associate to our Additives and Chemistry Group in the laboratory of Advanced fibers. The group is well established internationally in polymer additive chemistry. A more recent focus of the group is the development of sustainable polymer and additives. To strengthen activities in this area, we investigate development of functional covalent adaptable networks. Recently we have developed different types of inherently flame retardant dynamic networks for fire safe fiber reinforced composites and self healing coatings. The proposed position will address new chemistries for forming dynamic networks to be used for adhesive applications. In addition synthesis of phosphorus based functional additives for polymers will also be explored in various industrial projects.

Your tasks

  • Synthesis of novel monomers and additives for dynamic networks and thermoplasts;
  • Their incorporation in polymers and full mechanical, rheological, thermal and chemical characterization;
  • Lead work packages in various ongoing projects;
  • Collaborating with polymer engineers and physicists for exploring novel application of these materials;
  • Supervision of Master and Bachelor students in their internship or thesis work.

Your profile

You have a Ph.D. in organic or polymer chemistry with an experience in detailed polymer characterization (including thermo mechanical and rheological characterization). Practical synthetic chemistry knowledge and polymer characterization is essential. Candidates with demonstrated research skills and high quality publications will be considered. Fluency in English is required, further knowledge of German (or another language spoken in Switzerland) is a plus. You should be interested to develop and strengthen your academic record as well as your industrial network.
