The project will support the development of biohybrid systems for the controlled synthesis of organic chemicals through semi-artificial photosynthesis. A biotechnological platform will be developed that incorporates efficient light harvesting by semiconductors to drive engineered live cells to convert carbon dioxide and other feedstock chemicals to bespoke complex chemical products.
The PDRA will support the biological work of this project within a cross-disciplinary team with the ambition to develop bioelectrochemical and biophotocatalytic technologies to synthesise high value chemicals sustainably. Funding is provided by UKRI through a Japan-UK collaboration for artificial photosynthetic cell systems and an ERC Advanced Grant.
The PDRA should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, or Chemical Biology or a closely related discipline. A background in synthetic biology, protein purification or bioelectrochemistry would be desirable for the position.
