Scientist Biological Oceanography

GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research

Kiel, Germany

Job Description

The successful candidate will investigate processes of biological and microbial carbon pumps in the ocean. He:She will carry out scientific studies on the production and microbial degradation of organic substances. In addition, the successful candidate will develop new approaches for the determination of particle export (e.g. with sediment traps) and particle modification with the help of biomarkers. The successful applicant will also participate in the planning, application and management of third-party funded projects and sea-going expeditions as well as in the training of students.

Qualification

Prerequisites for a successful application include a doctoral degree in biological oceanography or a related field, as well as solid expertise in the marine carbon cycle and particle export. Strong knowledge of marine bacteria and phytoplankton is expected; in-depth understanding of the turnover of organic material (sugars, amino acids, lipids) is advantageous. Experience in open-sea marine research and willingness and ability to participate in multi-week expeditions are required. Experience in leading ship expeditions is also beneficial.
