Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor in Pharmacology and Therapeutics within the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin. The School of Medicine supports 5 health related undergraduate disciplines and over 1300 students. The discipline of Pharmaclology and Thereapeutics contributes to the teaching of pharmacology to medical, biomedical science and allied health professional students and is based in the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences on the St James’ Hospital campus and on the main Trinity campus. The postholder will have a key role in embedding curriculum reform changes within the new medical curriculum. This will involve a move from a didactic approach to small group teaching, along with an expansion of undergraduate research opportunities and its management. In addition to teaching at an undergraduate level the successful candidate will be expected to support postgraduate programs. They will also have a research profile in the area of translational Pharmacology appropriate to career stage, with a view to publishing in international journals and obtaining funding to sustain a research group of postgraduate students. The preferred candidate will support the academic mission of the Discipline of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and participate in the wider academic life of the College, including committee membership and professional development activities. They will be expected to maximise the discipline’s research links with St James’s Hospital and the Clinical Research Facility as well as the discipline of medical education.

Main Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Contribute to and provide academic leadership in all teaching and related activities in the School and College at undergraduate with an emphasis on vertical integration and blended learning;
  • A commitment to the development of innovative and relevant pharmacology teaching options.

Research

  • The preferred successful applicant will have a proven track record of research in the area of translational pharmacology as evidenced by publications in international journals and an ability to supervise postgraduate research;
  • The preferred candidate will have the capacity to secure research funding and show evidence of a feasible and productive research plan;
  • A record of research dissemination and peer reviewed publication arising from their research and related to translational pharmacology in international high impact journals;
  • An ability to work collaboratively with colleagues within the school, nationally and internationally as relevant for the development of their research;
  • Contribution to the research component of the schools’ strategic plan.

Standard Duties

  • Undertake administrative roles as assigned by the Head of Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and/or Head of School;
  • Organizational skills necessary to the performance of the teaching, research, and administration requirements of the role of Assistant Professor;
  • Ability to establish targets and goals in line with Discipline, School and College strategies;
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team;
  • Commitment to professional development.

Person Requirements

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance in the role.

Qualifications

  • Excellent academic record and have completed a primary degree and a PhD in pharmacology or similiarly related subject with significant postgraduate research experience;
  • Academic publications in peer reviewed international journals and/or publications of equal standing of recognized originality and value.

Knowledge & Experience

The successful candidate will be expected to clearly demonstrate the following:

Teaching

  • Experience in teaching and assessment of pharmacology;
  • Experience in small and large group teaching;
  • Experience of developing modules, teaching and assessment material.

Research & Scholarship

Essential:

  • Previous experience in research and publication;
  • Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations;
  • Experience of using new teaching media, including blended learning modalities;
  • Experience of working collaboratively and effectively in an inter and multidisciplinary environment;
  • Experience in supervising research postgraduate students Administration, Contribution to University and Engagement with Discipline & Society;
  • Ability to undertake administrative responsibilities as required by the Discipline, School and University;
  • Ability to represent the School and University on appropriate national and international advisory boards and professional bodies;
  • Organizational skills necessary to the performance of teaching, research and administration requirements of the role of Assistant Professor.

Skills

  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills;
  • Planning and organizational skills, particularly coordinating processes and systems;
  • Ability to represent the School and College on appropriate national and international advisory boards and professional bodies.
