As Associate Principal Scientist you will join the Enzyme House Process and Formulation development team within dsm-firmenich’s Taste, Texture & Health (TTH) Business Unit. TTH brings progress to life by creating what is essential for life, desirable for consumers and more sustainable for the planet. TTH’s Division Ingredient Solutions is a leading global supplier of food enzymes, cultures, taste and health ingredients and other specialties for many of the leading global and local dairy, baking, beverages, and savory food brands. The Center for Food Innovation (CFI) is the dedicated center for Research & Development (R&D) for TTH and is responsible for the development of food ingredients, cost-effective production processes and solutions for our customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Spearhead the development and optimization of separation, isolation and formulation processes for Enzymes, employing technologies such as filtration and purification to enhance product quality and yield;
- Oversee the scaling up of processes from laboratory to full-scale production, ensuring seamless technology transfer to manufacturing partners while maintaining process integrity and efficiency;
- Work closely with internal teams, including product management, supply chain, and operations, to align product specifications and production methods with commercial objectives. Shape projects and opportunities together with our business partners and translate project goals into concrete and accepted workplans for process and formulation development;
- Predict and analyze process data to identify intellectual property trends and areas for improvement, and prepare detailed technical reports, protocols, and regulatory documents to support decision-making and compliance;
- Provide mentoring to a team of scientists and technicians, offering coaching and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation within the downstream processing and formulation domain;
- Identify and resolve technical challenges in downstream processing, implementing process optimizations to enhance efficiency, product quality, and scalability.
You Bring
- You hold a PhD degree in Food Technology, (Bio-)Chemical Engineering, Process Technology, or a related field with > 10 years of industrial experience or a Master's degree with >15 years of industrial experience in downstream processing. Experience in the Enzymatic processes or Fermentation derived food ingredients is a pre;
- You have proficiency in theoretical concepts of separation technologies such as membrane filtration, extraction, centrifugation, and purification as well as know how to apply these DSP technologies in commercial applications;
- You have extensive experience in process modeling, development, optimization, and up-scaling, with a focus on bioactive food ingredient production processes, preferably in Enzymes or recombinant processes;
- You have familiarity with product regulatory requirements and experience in preparing and reviewing development reports, technical transfer documents, and standard operating procedures;
- You possess strong leadership abilities and critical thinking, and do not mind challenging the status-quo. You are able to engage stakeholders across organization with business acumen in shaping projects. You guide junior colleagues, share knowledge and results of your work, along with excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders;
- Given the international nature of the work, willingness for frequent travel to production site(s) with English proficiency as crucial and French is an advantage.
