Duties and responsibilities
Teaching and activities related to the administration and development of teaching:
- Teaching, using modern teaching methods and educational technology, at all levels of higher education;
- Supervising students (primarily master’s and doctoral students). Doctoral dissertations have been defended under the supervision of the professor within five years;
- Ensuring the availability of future academic staff in the field;
- Activities related to the administration and development of teaching;
- Teaching development;
- Professional development to enhance teaching and supervising skills.
Research, development and creative activities:
- High-level RDC activities, incl. leading and directing RDC activities in their specialisation, taking care that necessary resources, incl. research funding, are available, and taking responsibility for the performance of RDC activities;
- Directing a research theme or a part of it and within this work, supervising other academic staff involved in RDC activities;
- Conducting and interpreting large-scale genetic association studies;
- Development of methods and data layers;
- International-level research in the volume equivalent to at least two doctoral theses in five years;
- Participation in international research-organisational activities, incl. taking part in collaboration networks, work in the editorial boards of research publications or as a reviewer, work as an expert in foreign institutions (e.g. evaluating academic institutions, evaluating academic staff or allocating research grants), organising international research conferences;
- Participation in the development and organisation of terminology of the specialisation;
- Development of skills necessary for RDC activities, and professional development.
Activities related to the governance and institutional development of the university, incl.:
- participation in the work of academic and administrative decisionmaking bodies;
- performing at least one management function at the university;
- professional development to enhance management skills.
Social and public activities, incl.:
- popularising their specialisation;
- advisably, initiating projects that aim to apply the expert knowledge of the specialisation for the benefit of society;
- participation in activities related to the promotion and application of their specialisation on a national or international level.
Required qualifications
- PhD or an equivalent qualification.
Required experience
Teaching and activities related to the administration and development of teaching:
- Ability to organise teaching and teach at all levels of higher education;
- Previous teaching experience at least at the first two levels of higher education, incl. effective supervision of master’s and doctoral students;
- Experience in compiling teaching aids and materials for institutions of higher education;
- Knowledge of modern teaching aids, learning environments, teaching methods and their development opportunities.
Research, development and creative activities:
- Ability to direct research, development and creative activities (‘RDC activities’) in their specialisation, lead a research group and supervise academic staff;
- Long-term experience with managing and conducting projects in the field of genomics;
- Experience with coordinating and leading international collaboration projects in the field of complex trait genomics;
- International-level research in the specialisation, the volume of which so far is equivalent to at least three doctoral theses;
- Ongoing active engagement in research: internationallevel research in the past five years in a volume equivalent to at least 1.5 doctoral theses;
- Success in applying for research funding and being in charge of performing RDCrelated contracts in the past five years;
- International experience in line with clause 2.4 of Job Description of Academic Staff;
- Participation in the work of the international community o f the specialisation, incl. participation in the work of professional societies or in international RDC projects, work in the editorial boards of research publications or as a reviewer, work as an expert in foreign institutions (e.g. evaluating academic staff or allocating research grants), organising international research conferences.
Participation in the governance and institutional development of the university:
- Experience in team or project management.
Social and public activities:
- Participation in working groups and/or expert councils related to the promotion and application of the specialisation on a national or international level.
Required language skills
Very good command of English. According to the Language Act, academic staff with foreign citizenship working in Estonia must have acquired at least B1-level Estonian language skills after five years of work. This requirement will be added to the contract. The Centre for Professional Development offers foreigners and their family members the opportunity to participate in Estonian language courses.
