Junior Professorship (W1) in Marine Evolutionary Genomics

Junior Professorship (W1) in Marine Evolutionary Genomics

GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research

Kiel, Germany

We are expecting applications from early career researchers with a very good doctoral degree in the area of genetics of aquatic organisms, evolutionary biology, evolutionary genomics or related areas. The successful applicant will have in-depth knowledge in evolutionary genomics and bioinformatics and intends to or has already started to develop an independent research line after their doctorate, best demonstrated through excellent scientific publications. The research area should be in an innovative field of marine evolutionary biology and genomics, involving multicellular animals or plants. The research focus can either be novel to GEOMAR; or strengthen one of the existing topics in the research unit "Marine Evolutionary Ecology". Current focus areas are (epi)genomic adaptation processes of marine organisms to ocean change, the evolution of marine host-pathogen interactions, evolutionary adaptation in clonal organisms, fisheries-induced evolution, and assisted evolution to support active habitat restoration.

The successful applicant is expected to have deep proficiency in population genetics and ecological genomics, as well as in bioinformatic scripting, which also forms the basis for the associated teaching commitments. Teaching will mainly take place within the Master's program "Biological Oceanography" at GEOMAR. The teaching obligations are based on the state regulation on teaching obligations at universities (LVVO) of the state of Schleswig-Holstein and currently amount to 4 semester hours.

Highly desirable would be a track record of successful third-party funding acquisition as well as experience in teaching topics such as genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology or marine biology. Experience in supervising students would be advantageous. Cooperation with joint research initiatives at Kiel University and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is desirable, in particular participation within the Kiel University research priorities Kiel Marine Science (KMS) and/or Kiel Life Science (KLS) as well as with the Kiel Evolution Center (KEC).
