Job description
We are looking for a motivated candidate to join our team working on research projects aimed at smart marine vessels development. In this position, you will be developing, researching on machine vision, control, guidance and navigation algorithms within the scope of autonomous vessels. Ongoing projects include “Multi-modal marine perception and situational awareness systems development for navigating in complex dynamic marine environments” aiming at ice navigation.
Tasks:
- Conduct research leading to maritime autonomy by incorporating/developing state-of-the-art methodologies;
- Develop marine perception and situational awareness systems applicable to single/multiple manned/unmanned platforms;
- In-situ data collection, field experiments for validation and demonstrations;
- Publish scientific articles in top-tier journals and conferences;
- Collaborate in preparation of scientific reports, articles for periodicals, and reports for project deliverables;
- Writing research grant applications to attract research funding.
Marine Technology Competence Centre (MARTE) is located on the island Saaremaa, as well as Kuressaare College. Partially remote work is possible.
Education
- PhD degree in Mechatronics.
Professional experience
Required skills:
- An outstanding academic background with strong publications record;
- Prior experience in industry-academia collaborative research projects, emphasis on unmanned systems (USVs, UGVs, etc.);
- Experience in classical machine vision methods as well as ML based methods including and not limited to object detection, semantic segmentation, instance segmentation, etc.;
- Experience in hyperspectral and multispectral image processing;
- Programming skills in Python, C#, C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW and machine learning frameworks and libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, numpy, OpenCV (mandatory);
- Embedded systems development (STM32, PIC32, etc.);
- Version control with github, gitlab;
- Sound understanding of sensing technologies relevant to marine perception and situational awareness;
- Expertise with industrial automation, motion control, PLCs and IEC61131-3 programming languages (Structured Text);
- Knowledge of ROS and ROS2 and familiar with Linux;
- Proficiency in SolidWorks modeling, drafting and 3D printing technologies.
