Scientist Translational Research Assay development

The current position is within the VIB Discovery Sciences (VIB DS) team, a group of 20 translational research scientists and technicians with a strong industry background. VIB DS focuses on validating and translating VIB's scientific breakthroughs into drug, biomarker, and diagnostic discovery projects to support new ventures and licensing opportunities as part of the VIB Innovation & Business team.
To strengthen its team in Leuven, VIB DS is looking to recruit a creative, proactive and self-motivated Scientist in the field of assay development for drug discovery. Interested candidates should have demonstrated familiarity with different cellular assay technologies for small molecule, biologic, ASO, and other drug modalities. You will be joining a high-performing multi-disciplinary team, contributing to translating novel scientific discoveries into early drug candidates and bringing your expertise to further strengthen our capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the progression of internal drug discovery projects by providing expertise in assay development;
- Independently design and execute experiments on time;
- Stay current with state-of-the-art bioassay technologies and implement them in projects as appropriate and necessary;
- Coach and support a team of Research Associates in assay development;
- Present results and ideas to colleagues and external collaborators;
- Assist in the daily operational workload of the team;
- Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing;
- Contribute to drug target analysis and therapeutic modality choices;
- Evolve into a drug discovery project leader role.
Qualifications
- At least 2-3 years of experience in relevant laboratory setting with demonstrable proficiency in designing, optimizing and executing bioassays for drug discovery;
- Industrial experience is a plus;
- PhD or equivalent degree in biology, pharmacology, biochemistry or a related field with a strong background in cell biology and intracellular signaling;
- Proven technical expertise and scientific knowledge in at least one of the topics listed below: cell-based biosensors or proximity assays (FRET/BRET/complementation), plate-based imaging, SPR/BLI, CESTA, ASMS or high-throughput methods;
- Eager to learn new techniques, expand knowledge and take on responsibilities;
- Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Meticulous, independent and self-motivated;
- Solution-driven mindset;
- Sense of humor comes highly recommended;
- Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory.
