Position Summary:

The School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin invites applications for the position of Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care.

The successful candidate will contribute effectively to the Section of Small Animal Clinical Studies and will participate fully in undergraduate (clinical) teaching, in postgraduate residency training, and in the clinical service provided by the UCD Veterinary Hospital. In the clinical service, this candidate is expected to cover either the Emergency Medicine or Critical Care Services.

The successful candidate will also engage in original collaborative research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, obtaining funding and fostering collaborations, both nationally and internationally. It is expected that clinical service and related instruction will contribute approximately 50% of the appointee's effort, with the remainder being devoted to formal teaching, administration and other scholarly activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the strategic development of veterinary (under)graduate learning;
  • Provide clinical teaching to (under)graduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students and interns;
  • Active participation, supervision and clinical instruction of postgraduate education for DVMS students (residents) in training;
  • To assist in the provision of a referral service in small animal clinical studies;
  • Be an active clinical team player in the Small Animal Clinical Studies Section;
  • Play a role in planning for the expansion and future of small animal services in the UCD Veterinary Hospital, resulting in increasing clinical income and caseload;
  • To contribute, if necessary, to Section or School committees for the successful functioning of the organization;
  • To contribute to the further development of the highest standards of professional and clinical practice in the UCD Veterinary Hospital and ensure compliance with all aspects of relevant legislation/registration.

Selection Criteria:

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:

Experience and Qualifications:

  • A Veterinary Degree registerable with the Veterinary Council of Ireland;
  • Active specialist in Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC/ECECC) or Internal medicine (ECVIM-CA/ACVIM) certification (or eligibility to attain such a qualification in the immediate term);
  • A track-record of successful management of a high specialist Emergency and Critical Care caseload and hospital income generation through provision of such specialist services;
  • Experience of undergraduate or graduate teaching/training;
  • Commitment to supervision of Residents and postgraduate students;
  • Contribution to international, peer-reviewed publications;
  • Ability to undertake collaborative work in a team setting;
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills;
  • Computer literacy;
  • High motivation.

  • University teaching expertise, including course coordination skills and a willingness and ability to teach in areas other than the applicant's primary specialty;
  • Capacity to undertake independent and collaborative research.
