Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental NonTarget Mass Spectrometry

Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental NonTarget Mass Spectrometry

Stockholm University - Department of Environmental Science

Stockholm, Sweden

Project description

A postdoctoral fellow is being recruited to lead research on the nontarget chemical analysis of air in the INQUIRE project. We will conduct research and evaluate innovative actions to detect and reduce hazardous chemical determinants in homes, with a focus on exposure of infants and young children in over 200 homes distributed across 8 countries. This major Horizon Europe project includes a broad consortium from 20 global universities and research organizations. The overall aim of INQUIRE is to protect citizen health by providing knowledge, tools, and measures that substantially improve indoor air quality.

Main responsibilities

A major responsibility will be the analysis of passive air samples by HPLC- and GC-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry, and downstream data processing of the non-targeted workflows. You will also be tasked with preparing and shipping new passive air sampler media for deploying in homes across Europe. You will also perform chemical fractionations of toxic air sample extracts, integrate chemical and toxicological data in effects-directed analyses, and perform structural elucidation of unknown substances. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to plan, conduct, interpret and communicate the research and results. The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Professor Jonathan Martin and Dr. Stefano Papazian in the Exposure & Effects Unit, Department of ACES. The successful candidate will work primarily at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) with a diverse research group in the area of chemical exposomics.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry. Previous research experience in high resolution mass spectrometry, metabolomics or exposomics will be considered a great asset, as will the ability to process and interpret large mass spectrometry datasets using open-source software, including R and Python.
