Beamline Scientist at the Materials Chemistry Beamline ID15A

ESRF - European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

Beamline Scientist at the Materials Chemistry Beamline ID15A

ESRF - European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

Grenoble, France

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

The main area of activity of ID15A is materials chemistry, particularly battery science, catalysis, piezoelectric materials, and the study of glasses and other disordered systems. The core techniques of ID15A are high-speed multidimensional XRD and total scattering, for which the beamline hosts state-of-the-art instrumentation enabling unique research opportunities.

ID15A is especially optimized for operando and in-situ experiments using high-energy X-rays (40-100 keV).

You will be encouraged and supported to develop advanced XRD techniques and conduct outstanding research by leveraging the beamline fast-scanning and in-situ/operando capabilities. You will also support users at ID15A and collaborate with beamline staff, engineering and control groups to develop the beamline instrumentation and data analysis capabilities into reliable, user-friendly tools.

As a Beamline Scientist, you will be expected to:

  • Set up a research programme in materials chemistry, leveraging the multidimensional, operando capabilities of ID15A;
  • Support beamline users, exploring opportunities for collaboration;
  • Publish work in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific meetings;
  • Work with the ESRF/ID15A staff to carry out beamline operation tasks, such as design, upgrade and commissioning of equipment.

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, chemistry, or closely related scientific disciplines;
  • At least 2 years of postdoctoral research experience in any of these areas: energy materials, nanomaterials, catalysis, glasses, piezoelectrics. Strong background and/or practical experience in X-ray diffraction and scattering;
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental data analysis;
  • Excellent publication and presentation record;
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technicians, and users;
  • Proficiency in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of scientific programming (preferably Python);
  • Experience with instrumentation relevant to high-energy X-ray diffraction beamlines.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
