Professorship in Marine Pelagic Ecology

Professorship in Marine Pelagic Ecology

GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research

Kiel, Germany

The Professorship is located at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and will lead the Research Unit Ocean EcoSystems Biology within the Research Division Marine Ecology.

We are looking for a suitable candidate with an excellent track record in marine pelagic ecology and with a focus on marine planktonic organisms, a PhD in biology or in another topic within the life sciences, and a strong commitment to the research activities in the Research Division 3 Marine Ecology.

We expect outstanding, pioneering research in the field of marine pelagic ecology. The focus should be on host-virus interactions (e. g. phytoplankton viruses, bacteria-phages, virus-virus interactions, etc.) or other biological interactions (e. g. parasitism, mutualism, allelopathy, predator-prey, competition, etc.) as well as their influence on complex planktonic food webs.

The scientific qualification is demonstrated by a clearly structured, independent research profile with an excellent publication record in international journals and successful acquisition of competitive thirdparty funding (e. g. DFG, ERC, BMBF). It is desirable that suitable applicants complete the research portfolio of the Marine Ecology research area with regard to the open water column and with an overall ocean systems perspective. Experience in the management or in the role of a sub-project leader of collaborative projects is an advantage for a successful application. Furthermore, we expect a willingness for interdisciplinary cooperation with other research areas at GEOMAR and the Kiel Marine Sciences at Kiel University. Teaching is to be provided in the Master of Science Program "Biological Oceanography". The teaching language is English. Teaching duties are based on the current state ordinance on teaching duties at universities (LVVO) of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
