The Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU) is seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Community Ecology starting on April 1, 2025 or as agreed. The position of an Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an Associate Professor is for a fixed term of five years. Before the end of the fixed-term period, an evaluation procedure is launched to assess the merits of the person for the next level (fixed-term Associate Professor/permanent Full Professor).
We are looking for a colleague who will strengthen research and teaching in community ecology at JYU, as well as increase knowledge related to biodiversity and biodiversity assessments (incl. different observational, experimental and modelling methods). In a rapidly changing world, robust theoretical analyses of biodiversity based on observational and experimental data are key for predicting the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms determining how and to what extent individuals, species and communities respond to human-induced environmental stressors.
The responsibilities of the appointed Assistant/Associate Professor include internationally high-level research in biodiversity and community ecology. The teaching responsibilities include lectures and other courses about community ecology ranging from basic to postgraduate level courses. The tasks further include supervising students at the bachelor, master, and postgraduate levels, as well as tasks related to academic leadership.
The Assistant/Associate Professor is expected to contribute to the development of data science teaching in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and to the development of interdisciplinary science and teaching of sustainabilty in a cross-faculty setting of the University of Jyväskylä. In addition, we expect willingness to engage in evidence-based societal interaction to support the sustainability transition towards planetary well-being.
When evaluating candidates, we place the greatest emphasis on scientific merit. The qualification requirements should be met before the closing time of this call.
Please note that candidates for the position of the Assistant Professor must have completed a doctoral degree within the last nine years and have postdoctoral research experience in Finland and/or abroad. Special circumstances (e.g. parental leave and childcare leave, military service/nonmilitary service, or long-term illness) extend the nine-year rule accordingly.
