Job Description
- Performing geochemical and petrographic analysis on SHG and discrete tephra samples recovered from sediment gravity cores and seabed drilling. This comprises combined major and trace element, and volatile analyses of glasses and melt inclusions in phenocrysts by electron microprobe, LA-ICP-MS, FTIR and/or SIMS, glass shard and fluid bubble 2-D and 3-D shape analysis;
- Help organizing ship expeditions;
- Participation in T-SECTOR ship expeditions;
- Synthesis of the results from the three reference sites;
- Publication of project results in peer-reviewed journals and their presentation at scientific meetings;
- Interaction with the entire T-SECTOR team to organize and scientifically advance the project as a whole;
- Contribution to project-related outreach activities and regular project reporting.
Qualification
- PhD in geosciences; preferably in volcanology, petrology or sedimentology;
- Profound practical experience in analytical geochemistry of volcanic glass and minerals (electron microprobe, LA-ICP-MS) and subsequent provenance analysis using geochemical “finger-printing” of (marine) tephra samples;
- Knowledge in sediment petrography;
- Appropriate peer-reviewed publication record;
- Fluency in spoken and written English;
- Ability to work proactive in and with a team;
- Good communication abilities and organizational skills.
Advantages:
- Hands-on experience with sea-going expeditions;
- Practical experience in petrographical studies of volcanic samples by scanning electron microscopy and/or point-counting;
- Handling of large datasets and proficiency with job relevant software;
- Acquisition of a basic knowledge of German will be helpful for carrying out the laboratory duties.
