Post-doc in Brain Organoid Development and Electrophysiology for Biohybrid Brain Regeneration

YOUR TEAM

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where electrophysiology, neurobiology, biotechnology, and tissue bioengineering experts collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research.

The Enhanced Regenerative Medicine Research Line is coordinated by Gabriella Panuccio, MD and Biophysicist, who has extensive experience in epilepsy research and in vitro electrophysiology.

The research focuses on the development of functional biohybrids for enhanced brain regeneration. This includes the tight collaboration with international experts in stem cell biotechnology, biomaterials, electronic and neuromorphic engineering, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Pursuing the development of bioengineered hippocampal organoids building upon the ongoing work;
  • Characterizing organoid function using microelectrode array (MEA) electrophysiology;
  • Deploying the developed organoids in a graft-host interaction setting based on closed-loop electrophysiology architectures;
  • Collecting and archiving experimental data according to the Data Management Plan;
  • Providing guidance to PhD students under the PI supervision;
  • This position is financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 within the FET proactive project HERMES – Hybrid Enhanced Regenerative Medicine System, GA n. 824164.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A PhD in Neurobiology or similar disciplines;
  • Strong hands-on experience in isolation, preparation and maintenance of cell cultures from rodent brain;
  • Knowledge of hippocampal anatomy and physiology;
  • The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data;
  • Good command in spoken and written English.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Hands-on experience with in vitro electrophysiology (MEA and/or field potential recording) or strong motivation to learn it;
  • Knowledge of/experience with in vitro models of temporal lobe epilepsy;
  • Knowledge of MATLAB programming language;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Strong problem solving attitude;
  • High motivation to learn;
  • Spirit of innovation and creativity;
  • Good in time and priority management;
  • Ability to work in a challenging and international environment;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment;
  • Work experience within multi/cross-disciplinary teams and/or within companies;
  • International experience;
  • FELASA or equivalent personal certification;
  • A strong publication record;
  • Documented experience in coaching junior scientists.
