Senior Technician - Structural Biology Research Centre (Gaia Pigino Lab)

HT - Human Technopole

Milan, Italy

Job description

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: May 28th 2022

Human Technopole (HT) is a new interdisciplinary life science research institute, created and supported by the Italian government, with the aim of developing innovative strategies to improve human health. HT is composed of five research centres: Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, Neurogenomics, and Health Data Science. The Centres work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.

The Centre for Structural Biology at Human Technopole (HT) is looking for a Senior Technician to join the group of Dr. Gaia Pigino. The Pigino Lab works right at the interface between structural and molecular cell biology, combining the latest methodologies from the respective fields, but always with a strong emphasis on cryo-electron microscopy, correlative light and electron microscopy, and 3D image processing. We investigate the structure and function of cellular machines with a special focus on cilia and eukaryotic flagella. Our goal is to obtain mechanistic understanding of the molecular machineries required for the assembly and the function of cilia: conserved organelles that are fundamental for motility, sensory and signaling functions in most eukaryotic cells.

S(he) will have the following main responsibilities:

  • support the members of the group in several activities ranging from generating new mutants and genetically modified strains using cutting edge methodologies, such as gene insertion by CRISPR Cas9, to maintenance of the group databases;
  • be responsible of maintaining the livestock of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and of ordering and organizing the common stocks of reagents and consumables;
  • become a reference point for the members of the group.

The holder of the post will have the opportunity to develop her/his own research project and to learn cutting edge techniques in cryo-electron tomography and CLEM.

Job requirements

  • Experience in gene editing is required. Experience in gene editing of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and in CRISPR Cas9 are a plus, but not necessary;
  • Good communication skills, well-organised, proactive, collaborative, and driven by a problem-solving attitude;
  • Previous experience in electron microscopy or light microscopy is a plus, but not necessary;
  • Fluency in English is required - HT is an international research institute;
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates who are part of the protected categories list, according to L. 68/99.

Additional Information

HT offers a highly collaborative, international culture. The working language at HT is English. HT will foster top quality, interdisciplinary research by promoting a vibrant environment consisting of independent research groups with access to outstanding graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and core facilities.

HT is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to a leading, internationally competitive, research organization and seeks to promote a collegial and open atmosphere.

Please note that researchers coming to Italy for the first time, or returning after residing abroad, benefit from very attractive income tax reductions.

General enquires concerning the role should be sent to Dr. Gaia Pigino (gaia.pigino@fht.org). Applications should not be sent to this address.
