Join DAB and make real impact on the bio-based economy!

About DAB

DAB develops and deploys cutting-edge fermentation technology. Our unique and patented FAST platform (Fermentation Accelerated by Separation Technology) enables continuous fermentation with cost reductions of 20-50% or more and is one the most significant fermentation innovations of the past decade.

The global focus on synthetic biology has delivered breakthrough routes to replace fossil-based chemicals with sustainable bio-based alternatives. High manufacturing costs currently hamper the large-scale manufacturing of many of these alternatives. FAST addresses this issue head-on. It is the largest contributor to lowering manufacturing costs, facilitating large-scale deployment of bio-based chemicals. DAB promises significant impact.

DAB has a highly skilled workforce and is supported by motivated and capable investors. We are continuously looking for driven, capable talents to join our team. We have an opportunity for a Principal Scientist Fermentation.

The role

The purpose of the role is to drive development of optimised fermentation processes for FAST applications and ultimately commercial manufacturing for a wide range of strain-pathway-compound combinations, by managing the interface between synthetic biology with associated process development and the FAST technology.

You perform and direct all microbial-focused R&D activities when developing FAST fermentation processes. This encompasses strain selection, product & pathway optimisation (for continuous extractive systems), and fermentation development approaches tailored to DAB’s extractive fermentation R&D activities. The activities together create a robust basis of optimised fermentation conditions for FAST systems and fermentation scale-up.

The Principal Scientist works highly independently and is the main knowledge holder on all aspects of fermentation. You represent DAB in client and partner development projects. The role includes being a team leader for a small team of scientists.

You create knowledge, influence people, develop IP, and make impact!

Impact Areas

  • Lead strain and fermentation process development with a view to advance the development and deployment of FAST technology;
  • Work closely with the Process Technology scientists and engineers to develop and scale-up robust industrial fermentation processes;
  • Work with clients and partners to co-create winning strain-process-product combinations;
  • Interface with CRO’s and CMO’s to execute R&D and production activities;
  • Analyse and report fermentation data. Drive the selection and use of appropriate data management and analytical tools;
  • Write and present reports and papers, as appropriate for the company objectives;
  • Lead, and participate in, multi-disciplinary project teams;
  • Provide leadership to the team, supervising and mentoring fermentation and laboratory staff.

Key competencies

  • Microbial physiology;
  • Metabolic engineering;
  • Operational fermentation (incl. scaling);
  • Extractive fermentation;
  • R&D management;
  • Technical communication to varied audiences;
  • Self-management, initiative and resourcefulness.

The candidate

You are motivated to make impact in the global race to replace the fossil value chain by a sustainable bio-based one. You like working in a start-up, with a fast pace, close teamwork, limited structure, high highs and unfortunately, a few lows. You are a self-starter and can work independently but thrive in a team setting. You have at least 5 years experience in fermentation science related roles, involving R&D as well as manufacturing. You possess an academic degree, preferably a PhD.
