Computer Scientist - Lead of the Research Group “Data Access and Processing”

Computer Scientist - Lead of the Research Group “Data Access and Processing”

DLR - German Aerospace Center

Jena, Germany

Your mission:

For the DLR Institute of Data Science in Jena a new research group “Data access and processing” will be established. In the course of the scientific activities of the group, novel, scalable data management systems for non-relational data (e.g., raster data, time series data, point cloud data) will be designed and developed. The research activities are conducted by considering and leveraging modern hardware technologies (e.g., multi-core processing, SIMD, NVMe SSDs, computational storage, non-volatile memory, etc.) and modern software development best practices and tools. Initial cooperation projects exist with external partners, such as the Ilmenau University of Technology and the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, as well as other DLR institutes from the application areas space, energy, and transportation. In addition, new application partners from other DLR institutes and external academic and industrial partners shall be identified and involved in further research activities. The job holder will develop novel methods and processes for efficiently managing and processing large data volumes from various application areas, such as earth observation, astronomy, autonomous driving, and power generation. A particular emphasis will be on the design and development of solutions, which can scale to large data volumes and are tailored to the respective execution environment (e.g., on-premise, cloud, edge).

The developed concepts shall be implemented and integrated into real data management systems using the corresponding software development processes.

Besides the scientific work, the job holder takes over the scientific lead of the research group “Data access and processing” and is responsible for setting the strategic and technical direction of the research group. In addition to the coordination of the scientific work, the job holder establishes new national and international cooperations with academic and industrial partners.

We offer a challenging work and research environment, where family friendliness and your healthiness are our highest priorities.

Your tasks include:

  • Literature survey and identification of research trends in the area of data management and data processing on non-relational data
  • Identification and preparation of research problems related to the management of large data volumes in various execution environments (e.g., cloud, edge)
  • Development and evaluation of data management systems for non-relational data, such as raster data, time series data, and point cloud data based on requirements derived from concrete use cases
  • Software development for, evaluation and integration of modern computer hardware (e.g., novel data storage and processor technologies) in existing data management systems or development of data management systems based on novel computer hardware technologies
  • Optimization and specialization of data management systems to concrete use cases with the help of performance profiling tools and standardized performance benchmarks
  • Design and creation of system architectures for complex data management systems by using modern software development processes (e.g., Scrum) and incremental adjustments of the system architecture in case of changing user requirements
  • Identification and development of new application areas with data management challenges, which cannot be solved by existing state-of-the-art data management systems
  • Publication and presentation of research results at national and international conferences
  • Development of a strategic and technical direction of the research group
  • Documentation and quality assurance of the research activities in the group
  • Coordination of research activities within the group
  • Establishment of national and international collaborations
  • Acquisition and management of research and development projects
  • Representation of the research area at conferences and in national and international councils
  • Technical supervision of PhD and undergraduate students
  • Approval of business trips, vacations, and flexible work times

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies in Computer Science (Master/Diploma) or another comparable, related university degree with a focus on data management and processing
  • Successfully defended PhD thesis with a focus on scalable data management and processing on large data sets (big data)
  • Proven scientific expertise in the area data management, database implementation techniques or high-performance computing and multiple years of practical experience or deep knowledge in big data management, database implementation techniques (e.g., query processing, index structures and data structures, leveraging modern hardware, such as SIMD, multi-core processing, SSDs, non-volatile memory, and hardware accelerators)
  • Proven, multiple years of experience in system-level software development (e.g., in C/C++, Rust, or similar)
  • Knowledge in data management or processing of raster data, timeseries data, or point clouds is a plus
  • Experience in acquisition and execution of projects is of advantage
  • Joy of working in a scientific environment
  • Very good written and oral English language skills
  • At least good written and oral German language skills
  • Willingness to travel (national/international)
