About the team/job

EMBL is seeking to recruit a Lab Manager in the Directors' Research Unit at EMBL Heidelberg. The position is available in the group of EMBL Director General Prof. Edith Heard. The Heard group focusses on mammalian epigenetics. The lab mainly employs cellular and developmental biology as well as molecular biology and genomics approaches to investigate epigenetic process such as X chromosome inactivation using both in vitro and in vivo models. The Lab Manager will be involved in organization of the laboratory and will contribute to scientific projects in the lab.

Your role

Scientific Research

The successful candidate will directly or indirectly support all ongoing scientific projects in the Heard lab by performing their own research projects, by contributing to other lab member's projects (using the techniques listed below) or by facilitating the environment for other lab member's research (i.e. lab management, training). They will present their work in internal lab meetings. The techniques commonly employed in the Heard lab include:

  • Expert support and management of ongoing scientific projects (internal & collaborative) using techniques commonly employed in the Heard lab (see below);
  • Tissue culture of mouse embryonic stem cells and their derived counterparts;
  • Cell biology (e.g. immunofluorescence,fluorescence in situ hybridization);
  • Biochemistry (e.g. Western blotting);
  • Molecular biology (e.g. molecular cloning, PCR, pyrosequencing);
  • Genome engineering (e.g. using CRISPR-Cas9);
  • Next-generation sequencing methods (e.g. RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, Cut&Run, Hi-C);
  • Participating in generation of large-scale datasets using the mentioned techniques above.

Training and supervision

The successful candidate will:

  • Train new group members and visitors in using the lab's equipment, spaces, databases, software resources etc. as well as in technologies/techniques commonly used in the lab (see above);
  • Test new tools, reagents and equipment; establish and improve experimental protocols;
  • Work in close collaboration with the EMBL Mouse Facility.

Lab Management

  • General laboratory management, including administration of reagent databases, instrument maintenance and, space organization of the of laboratory and the office;
  • Managing the budget and subvention of the Group;
  • Serve as interface between EMBL's service departments (building maintenance, scientific instrument maintenance, workshops, and core facilities) and the research Group;
  • Interfacing with scientists and research technicians in other Units;
  • Support staff at the level of Unit organisation.

You have

The successful candidate should have confirmed expertise and around 5 years working experience in a related field. Moreover, the ideal candidate should be independent in using and teaching basic methods and techniques in the fields of molecular and cellular biology, imaging-based techniques and genetics. Experience in genome engineering is beneficial. (S)he should have demonstrated proficiency in coordination and organization tasks. Fluency in English is required and the successful candidate should have good communication and interpersonal skills.

You might also have

Previous experience in the fields of epigenetics. A certificate of animal care (e.g. FELASA B).
