About the team/job

ELIXIR is seeking a Scientific Officer to drive stakeholder engagement, document the landscape and identify key requirements relevant for the continued successful implementation of ELIXIR's federated infrastructure for access to human genomics and translational data.

This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in many large, multi-million Euro research projects that are transforming the way that human genomic health data is managed across Europe and drive scientific collaborations that improve the health of citizens.

Your role

Within this role you will join the dynamic and international Human Genomics and Translational Data (HGTD) team at the ELIXIR Hub in Hinxton, UK. Your main purpose will be to coordinate project activities and effectively engage with stakeholders. It is critical to gather and ensure requirements from each group are incorporated into an ELIXIR-wide comprehensive approach to the management, archival, access, and analysis of sensitive human data consented for reuse in scientific research across Europe.

You will contribute to externally funded projects, in particular the EU funded HealthyCloud project ( to drive the strategic agenda of stakeholders to deliver recommendations for a federated cloud infrastructure that is strongly aligned with the FAIR data principles. As well as working on tasks within project Work Packages, you will also develop the stakeholder landscape more generally along with other research infrastructures and key partners. You will also have the opportunity to work on tasks in other projects that will move towards implementation of stakeholder requirements in this rapidly developing field.

Reporting to ELIXIR's Head of HGTD you will develop ELIXIR's portfolio of projects in this area and participate actively in the development and promotion of best practices within ELIXIR. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the ELIXIR Hub, as well as with colleagues at the 23 ELIXIR Nodes and other project partners throughout Europe to deliver projects and services.

The main duties and responsibilities, are as follows:

  • Develop a clear understanding of project commitments, expected outcomes, and alignments across the ELIXIR portfolio and maintain up-to-date materials for internal and external discussions and decisions;
  • Draft project deliverables, briefing papers and contribute to consultation responses;
  • Provide background research and lead the drafting on an overall strategy for stakeholder engagement;
  • Develop a stakeholder group in the HealthyCloud project to deliver a Strategic Agenda (as part of WP8);
  • Maintain a working understanding of the ELIXIR Human Genomics and Translational Data roadmap including key services and actors critical for implementation to ensure alignment of stakeholder activities with the overall strategy and roadmap implementation;
  • Support the delivery of tasks in ELIXIR HGTD related projects, service portfolio and programme;
  • Present as appropriate to internal and external audiences.

You have

  • A degree in the life sciences or similar, or equivalent industry experience;
  • Experience in engaging with stakeholder activities;
  • 3+ years experience in a biomedical (preferably bioinformatics) research environment;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

You might also have

  • Good understanding of the human data research field;
  • Experience in contributing to complex projects across a team or a number of partners to deliver against challenging goals and timelines is desired.

This will be a busy role with frequently changing priorities so it is important that the role-holder is able to:

  • Demonstrate the flexibility, self-motivation and resilience required to set objectives and plan work independently based on agreed outcomes;
  • Meet deadlines and assess priorities to handle a heavy workload;
  • Work to a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Extract and distill information from complex sets of sources;
  • Occasionally work outside normal office hours and travel to ELIXIR Nodes and meetings as required.
