At IFF Health & Biosciences, our Leiden R&D team develops engineered enzymes and their microbial production engines (bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi) for applications in the areas of food & beverages, biofuels, home & personal care, animal feed, paper & textile processing, and more.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Fermentation engineer to join our experienced Bacterial & Fungal R&D team, supporting both prokaryotic cell factory engineering projects and product development projects. As a Fermentation engineer you will work in close collaboration with Fermentation scientists, Molecular biologists, Lab automation engineers and Data scientists focusing on applying, developing, and optimizing automated laboratory fermentation tools and processes to test, study and analyze microbial production systems in-depth.

The successful candidate has extensive hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of fermentation technology. Experience in automating fermentation workflows, and advanced knowledge of applying statistics in data analysis is a plus. Enjoying cooperating in multidisciplinary teams and a passion for science and technology are mandatory.

Your work will involve one or more aspects of the following:

  • Plan, design and execute experiments, at bench and small scale, within multiple protein engineering, strain engineering and development projects;
  • Identify and implement new and emerging developments and techniques in the field by searching and analyzing lab process equipment and systems that could accelerate strain test throughput, and improve workflows and output;
  • Work closely together with data scientists to build data processing workflows and safeguard generated data;
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant scientific literature and intellectual property;
  • Prepare and present technical reports, data summaries, protocols and other technical and regulatory documentations;
  • Participate in drafting patent applications in collaboration with peers and the legal team;
  • At IFF in Leiden, we believe that both lab and office work are equally significant; in this position, >50% of the time is expected to be spent on lab work;
  • Due to its global character, this position offers the possibility of traveling and may require participating in (online) meetings after standard working hours.

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:

  • Ph.D. or MSc. degree in Fermentation technology, Bioprocess engineering, Biotechnology or similar. For MSc. degree preferably with experience in industry or relevant academic setting;
  • Demonstrated work experience with various microbial cultivation & fermentation systems;
  • Experience in integration of laboratory measurement tools & systems;
  • Hands on experience in life science automation & liquid handling systems;
  • The preferred candidate will have experience in designing DoE type of experiments and knowledge of statistics;
  • Affinity for, or skilled in, computer programming & database development;
  • Teamwork mindset;
  • Hands-on mentality and strong affinity for lab work;
  • Enthusiasm to continuously learn, investigate and improve processes;
  • Goal oriented and can-do attitude;
  • Excellent communication, presentation and networking skills;
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
