IFF - International Flavors & Fragrances

Leiden, Netherlands

IFF is very excited to welcome a new Scientist Fungal Molecular Biology to our team, and we hope it’s you!

IFF is a global leader in biotechnology; in early 2021, the company consolidated its leadership position by merging with DuPont’s Nutrition & Biosciences division. The IFF laboratories in Leiden have a long and dynamic history that goes back to the beginnings of modern biotechnology (Gist-Brocades), through pioneering industrial enzyme technology (Genencor), to becoming the world market leader in sustainable bio-solutions (Danisco).

At IFF Health & Biosciences, our R&D team develops microbial production strains (bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi) and engineers enzymes for applications in the areas of food & beverages, biofuels, home & personal care, animal feed, paper & textile processing, and more. We have a strong focus on providing sustainable solutions on an industrial scale, and we are constantly evolving and innovating to offer competitive high-end products to our international customers.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated researcher to join our Fungal Genetics team focusing on strain development and protein engineering. The successful candidate has extensive hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of molecular biology. Experience in fungal genetics, protein expression and high-throughput screening is a plus. Enjoying cooperating in multidisciplinary teams and a passion for science and technology are mandatory.

As a Scientist, your work will involve one or more aspects of the following:

  • Contribute to molecular biology tasks within project-related design-build-test-learn cycles, such as strain engineering, library construction and high-throughput screening;
  • Characterization of strain performance and bottleneck analysis using flow cytometry and “-omics” tools;
  • Identify and implement new and emerging developments and techniques in the field;
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant scientific and intellectual literature;
  • Prepare and present technical reports, data summaries, protocols and other technical and regulatory documentations;

  • Your Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology or similar, preferably with 1-3 years of experience in industry or relevant academic experience;
  • You will bring experience with filamentous fungi, enzyme engineering, protein expression, metabolic pathway engineering, fermentation and high-throughput screening is a plus;
  • You will bring demonstrated experience with genetic engineering of microorganisms is required;
  • The preferred candidate will have experience in flow cytometry, “omics” techniques, microscopy and microfluidics;
  • We will rely on your hands-on mentality and strong affinity for lab work;
  • Your eagerness to continuously learn and investigate;
