The Human Technopole is looking for a Lab Manager of the Data Generation and Experimental Validation unit of the Centre for Computational Biology.

The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up, coordinating and maintaining the wet lab infrastructure of the centre. This includes next-generation sequencing, single-cell profiling, imaging and tissue culture. Specifically, the Lab Manager will be part of a group of specialised technical posts that will perform tissue collection, multi-omic profiling, single-cell sequencing, genome editing and imaging data generation (histopathology and immunohistochemistry) within the Centre. Besides lab management duties, the candidate will also be directly involved in the generation of sequencing data from human samples and model systems.

The group will rely on bioinformatics support from core posts and will work closely with the computational members of the centre, as well as other centres of HT. Data generation will be supported by the Genomics Core Facility of HT, with which the Centre for Computational Biology will interact on a day-to-day basis.

A key mission of the role will be to enable members of the centre for make use of its experimental infrastructure. The lab manager will also be expected to ensure that the experimental work within the centre is state-of-the-art and will contribute to the development of new protocols and the rapid standardization/implementation of new technologies. They will also be involved in the recruitment, training and mentoring of staff.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of the Centre for Computational Biology, Prof Andrea Sottoriva.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Setting up, coordinate and maintain a molecular biology laboratory to process samples for multi-omic profiling, single-cell sequencing and histopathological imaging;
  • Interact with a team of technical posts within the centre that are part of the experimental infrastructure;
  • Generate next-generation sequencing libraries from patient samples and model systems;
  • Work with the Genomics Core Facility for sample sequencing;
  • Be responsible for implementing priorities and resource planning for the centre;
  • Supervise sample preparation, data collection, evaluation and quality control;
  • Ensure the genomics and imaging data generation is world-class;
  • Coordinate sample tracking and storage;
  • Be responsible for Health and Safety in the lab;
  • Keep track of lab stocks and order consumables at need;
  • Cooperate with other groups to implement novel technologies;
  • Manage funding and access charges with periodic review to ensure sustainability and competitiveness;
  • Constantly promote protocols optimisation to maximise cost-effectiveness;
  • Closely follow technological developments that could benefit the centre;
  • Interact with the manufacturers and engineers of the relevant equipment;
  • Organise introductions and assistance for new users of the unit;
  • Help select, lead and mentor junior staff;
  • Prepare for centre reviews by external experts;
  • Participate actively in the overall development of HT core facilities;
  • Build effective links and collaborations within HT;
  • Develop links with other national and international genomics facilities;
  • Support third-party fundraising where possible.

Job requirements

  • +5 years of hands-on experience in the use of high-throughput sequencing technologies, and ideally also single-cell sequencing and/or long-read technologies;
  • PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, e.g. molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or a related field of science;
  • +3 years experience in a managerial role in a laboratory or facility;
  • Documented experience with setting up workflows and robust standard operating procedures for quality assurance;
  • Experience in sample preparation and tracking, specifically human tissues;
  • Excellent laboratory skills and trouble-shooting;
  • Ability to interact effectively with other teams and work synergistically to drive projects forward;
  • Highly organised and meticolous;
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute;
  • Proven leadership, communication, team building and problem-solving skills.

The remuneration package is internationally competitive and comprise a highly competitive salary, pension scheme, medical and other social benefits and support for relocation and installation. The initial contract is for 5 years and it is renewable.
