HT - Human Technopole

Computational Biologist/Staff Scientist

HT - Human Technopole

Milan, Italy

Job description

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: 22 April 2021

Computational sciences applied to biology and medicine are at the very core of the mission of HT. The Centre for Computational Biology has the goal of developing new mathematical and computational approaches for the analysis and interpretation of medical and biological data. Computational biology at HT is not just about developing new methods for data analysis, but more importantly, also about asking fundamental questions about biology and human health that can be addressed only using computational approaches, from mathematical modelling of dynamical systems, to machine learning and Artificial Intelligence.

The Sottoriva Lab in the Centre for Computational Biology at Human Technopole combines computational and experimental techniques to study cancer genomics and evolution, with particular focus on drug resistance. We generate multiomics and longitudinal data from patients and model systems and integrate those with mathematical models of tumour evolution, as well as machine learning approaches. The ultimate goal is to predict the future course of the disease and design novel therapeutic strategies to control drug resistance. The central paradigm of our approach is the combination of theory and data, with experimental designs and data generation that are grounded in modelling.

The lab is looking for a Senior Computational Biologist/Staff Scientist to help coordinating and leading the different research projects and collaborations the team is involved in. The successful candidate will have a strong background in computational biology, bioinformatics and mathematical/statistical modelling of biological data. They will also be experienced in coordinating teams as part of large projects or consortia. The post will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and execution of projects, will be directly involved in the analysis of multi-omics data, and will also help with mentoring other team members.

Importantly, the lab benefits from the computational infrastructure provided by the Centre, which involves multiple posts in the core bioinformatics unit, as well as a team of core wet lab scientists in the Data Generation and Experimental Validation unit, exclusively dedicated to generate novel datasets, ranging from single-cell genomics, multiomics, and spatial tumour profiling.

The lab is also supported by the HT High-Throughput Genomics Facility, which generates genomics data, and by the HT Computational Genomics Facility, which provides analysis support with established pipelines. State-of-the-art High-Performance Computing infrastructure and Data Storage support all the computational needs of HT.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Group Leader, Prof Andrea Sottoriva, who is also the Head of the Centre for Computational Biology.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Coordinate and help leading the research projects in the lab;
  • Think independently, providing scientific insight and drive projects forward and explore new avenues of research;
  • Interact with the bioinformatics core posts to analyse samples, including whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing, transcriptome sequencing, ATAC-seq, and single cell data;
  • Analyse data from patients and model systems, including patient-derived cancer organoids, again with the support of the bioinformatics core unit;
  • Interact with a team of technical posts in the bioinformatics unit with different computational expertise;
  • Work with the HT High-Throughput Genomics Facility and the Computational Genomics Facility, as well as the data generation unit within the centre;
  • Be responsible for implementing priorities and resource planning for the team;
  • Coordinate the computational needs of the team with HT Scientific Computing;
  • Design data management and sharing plans, as well as GDPR compliance;
  • Help select, lead and mentor junior staff;
  • Prepare for centre reviews by external experts;
  • Build effective links and collaborations within HT;
  • Develop links with other national and international institutions;
  • Support third-party fundraising.

Job requirements

  • +5 years of hands-on experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, or mathematical/statistical modelling in biology;
  • PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, e.g. computational biology, computer science, physics or a related field of science;
  • 2+ years experience in a leading/managerial role in a centre, laboratory or facility;
  • Proven track record demonstrating the leading of projects independently;
  • Experience in the analysis of human samples;
  • Excellent computational skills, outstanding programming abilities and trouble-shooting;
  • HPC and Unix systems savvy;
  • Ability to interact effectively with other teams and work synergistically to drive projects forward;
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute;
  • Proven leadership, communication, team building and problem-solving skills.

Application Instructions

Please apply by sending:

  1. a CV;
  2. a motivation letter in English;
  3. names and contacts of 2 referees.

The remuneration package is internationally competitive and comprise a highly competitive salary, pension scheme, medical and other social benefits and support for relocation and installation. The initial contract is for 5 years and it is renewable.

Importantly, international candidates coming to Italy for the first time, or Italian nationals returning after residing abroad, benefit from very attractive income tax benefits.

For any inquiry about the call, please feel free to contact Prof Andrea Sottoriva at andrea@humantechnopole1.recruitee.com (this email address should not be used to send applications).
