Biogeochemical Marine Ecologist

Biogeochemical Marine Ecologist

BAS - British Antarctic Survey

Cambridge, United Kingdom

Description

The British Antarctic Survey is looking for a Marine Ecologist - Biogeochemical to join the Ecosystems team.

Purpose

The post-holder will have be carrying out work in biological oceanography and biogeochemistry to support several ongoing programmes of work. The SCOOBIES programme is making a long-term assessment of major biogeochemical parameters in the northern Scotia Sea, which is a globally significant region of atmospheric carbon drawdown and sequestration, as well as a region in which ocean acidificationis advancing rapidly. The postholder will undertake fieldwork to ensure the continuation of these measurements as well as laboratory analyses to quantify key parameters. They will also be supporting the PICCOLO project, especially on the collection and analysis of plankton samples. The post-holder will be expected to write reports on their field expeditions and analyses and, where appropriate, to lodge these with the appropriate data depository (e.g. Polar Data Centre, GBIF. Where appropriate, they will also be encouraged to write manuscripts based on their analyses.

Qualification

  • PhD (or equivalent) in biogeochemistry or numerate environmental or oceanographic science area.

Duties

The post-holder will have the following roles:

  • Determine the abundance and diversity of zooplankton at the SCOOBIES sites and PICCOLO sampling stations;
  • Analysis of physical environmental variables (e.g. Temperature, Salinity, Mixed layer depth) at sampling sites;
  • Determination of biogeochemical variables, specifically POC, PIC, TA, pCO2 and Chl-a at SCOOBIES sites and POC and PIC at PICCOLO sites;
  • Participate in fieldwork as required to address team goals, and including: packing and cruise preparation, including mooring systems; writing cruise reports
  • Recover and prepare moored environmental sampling devices (sediment trap water column sampler, other water chemistry samplers, as appropriate);
  • Lodge quality controlled datasets with Polar Data Centre;
  • Write-up cruise reports and lead and/or assist in the writing of peer-reviewed manuscripts.
