The Human Technopole Foundation is looking for the Senior Manager of High-Throughput Sequencing and Biobanking, which is part of the Genomics Core Facility.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Chair of the Genomics User Group.

S(He) will be responsible for setting up and maintaining a facility capable of state-of-the-art genome, transcriptome and epigenome sequencing, and to oversee the delivery of large-scale genomics projects for the genetic dissection of human traits, including through automation-intensive workflows and biobanking.

A key mission will be to enable internal and external users to make use of the facility.

S(he) will also be expected to contribute to the development of new protocols and the rapid standardization/implementation of new technologies (eg. long-read sequencing technologies). S(he) will be involved in the recruitment, training and mentoring of facility staff.

Key tasks and responsibilities

The Senior Manager of High-Throughput Sequencing Operations will:

  • be responsible for implementing priorities and resource planning for the facility;
  • help select, lead and mentor junior facility staff, including first-line computational support;
  • supervise sample preparation, data collection, evaluation and quality control;
  • cooperate with other groups to implement novel technologies;
  • ensure the genomics research support is world-class;
  • manage funding and access charges with periodic review to ensure sustainability and competitiveness;
  • constantly optimise protocols and maximise cost-effectiveness;
  • closely follow technological developments that could benefit the facility;
  • develop a state-of-the-art biobanking facility;
  • interact with the manufacturers and engineers of the relevant equipment;
  • organise introductions and assistance for new users of the facility;
  • prepare for facility reviews by external experts;
  • participate actively in the overall development of HT core facilities;
  • report regularly on progress to the genomics user group and its chair;
  • help design and advise IT services to meet facility and user requirements;
  • build effective links and collaborations within HT;
  • develop links with other national and international genomics facilities;
  • support third-party fundraising where possible.

Job requirements

  • +5 years of hands-on experience in the use of high-throughput short-read sequencing technologies, and ideally also long-read technologies;
  • PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, e.g. molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or a related field of science;
  • Previous experience in managerial role in a Genomics Core Facility;
  • Documented experience with setting up automated processes for handling high sample volumes, including lab and computational workflows and robust standard operating procedures for quality assurance;
  • Documented experience in delivery of large-scale genomic projects;
  • Experience in sample preparation, including from human tissues;
  • Experience in large scale biobanks;
  • Ability to set up and coordinate bioinformatics analysis;
  • Excellent laboratory skills and trouble-shooting;
  • Ability to interact effectively with other teams and work synergistically to drive projects forward;
  • Meticulous organization;
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute;
  • Proven leadership, communication, team building and problem-solving skills.
  • The Senior Manager of the Genomics Core Facility will be based in Milan.
