Postdoctoral Researcher in Vaccine Development

Postdoctoral Researcher in Vaccine Development

Örebro University

Örebro, Sweden

Subject area

The position is in Bimedicine.

Background

Global epidemics of infectious diseases have often successfully been controlled and even eradicated by the development of vaccines distributed through effective vaccination programs. Microorganisms causing infectious diseases are constantly emerging and re-emerging which highlights the need to develop new and improved vaccines.

Developvaccines@oru, is a new research project that focus on the exploration of immunization via mucosal membranes (airways and gastrointestinal tract), and the development of effective vaccines that are easy to administer. The current position is primarily placed within the subproject “Composition and formulation” and you will be involved in the work developing suitable combinations of adjuvants and antigens of our prototype vaccine candidates, chiefly in bacterial hosts with focus on probiotic strains. You will also work in close collaboration with the researchers in the other two subprojects (“Production” and “Vaccination and evaluation”).

The project is transdisciplinary and includes personnel from two research environments (“The inflammatory response and infection susceptibility centre” (iRiSC) at the School of Medical Sciences and “Örebro Life Science Centre” (OLSC) at the School of Science and Technology). It also includes business partners in the Life Science/Pharmaceutical industry in addition to other academic partners. Örebro University is one of the most rapidly expanding universities in Sweden, and was most recently placed at number 75 when Times Higher Education ranked the young universities in the world, and at number 30 with regards to scientific impact measured as the citation rate of published papers.

Duties and responsibilities

The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills. The applicant will be involved in genetic engineering including CRISP/Cas9 technology, bacterial growth, transformation and optimization for antigen production. The applicant will also be involved in establishing novel delivery platforms with a special focus on probiotic bacterial strains. Vaccine antigen candidates including specific host/antigen combinations will be tested and combined with adjuvants suitable for mucosal administration. The applicant will also be involved in the immunological evaluation of the vaccine candidates in vitro and in vivo (in cell- and animal models). The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the other researchers and industrial partners within the project.

Eligibility

Eligible for the appointment as postdoctoral researcher are applicants holding a doctoral degree in Biomedicine or in related subject areas (e.g. Immunology, Biochemistry or Molecular Cell Biology) the doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that may however also be considered if special grounds exist (leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical duties, an elected position in a trade union, or other similar circumstances).

Assessment criteria

General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate, as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to perform the duties well. Particular importance shall be attached to the qualities enabling the candidate to contribute to the future development of both research and education. A demonstrated ability and desire to pursue an academic career is also of importance.

Preferably, you have experience with vaccine development and have skills using molecular cell biological, biochemical and immunological techniques, including application of those on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Previous research activities within bacterial biotechnology and mucosal immunology is of special interest. Previous experience in electron microscopy is also an advantage. Since the project will be conducted in close collaborations with industrial partners and other researchers, a cooperative mindset is of utmost importance. The applicant should also have genuine interest in science, be highly organized, be able to meet deadlines, have a clear sense of responsibility, and be goal oriented. The applicant shall also be fluent in oral and written English, have a good proficiency in scientific writing.
