Purpose of role

The occupant of this role will lead the ongoing development, delivery and assessment of degree apprenticeship programmes with the School. The role holder will work within an existing dedicated apprenticeship team including Apprenticeship Manager and five Clinical Assistants/Teaching Assistants working on the degree apprenticeship within the School, and as part of the University’s Professional and Workbased Learning team.

Main responsibilities

(Primary accountabilities and responsibilities expected to fulfil the role) - % time per year

Teaching, learning and assessment - 65%

  • To lead, develop and deliver relevant course content, teaching and assessment associated with the School’s degree apprenticeship programme;
  • Support operational academic requirements of the degree apprenticeship (quality assurance, assessment, monitoring, etc.);
  • Develop and deliver a wider range of CPD courses, dependent on skill set;
  • To participate in the delivery of teaching across the integrated, undergraduate curriculum, dependent on skill set;
  • Attendance at relevant School meetings including Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee meetings and Examination Board meetings;
  • To act as a Personal Tutor;
  • Teaching on the undergraduate curriculum at the School and/or Clinical Associate practices alongside the delivery of first opinion or referral services dependent on skill set and clinical qualifications;
  • To contribute to the teaching of post-graduate clinical students including interns and residents;
  • To teach and examine in a wide range of modules convened by the School. The modules involved may embrace any area of Veterinary Science (dependent upon the background and experience of the persons appointed).

Administrative/general - 15%

  • Any administrative duties appropriate to the grade and role in support of the administration of the School;
  • Contribute to School marketing and recruitment activities (including outreach, open days and admissions).

Other - 20%

  • Undertake appropriate training and continuous professional development, including requirement to attain teaching qualifications, if not already held;
  • The delivery of a clinical service via a Clinical Associate practice dependent on clinical qualifications and experience;
  • To forge appropriate clinical and educational collaborations within and outside the University;
  • To assist with the efficient and effective completion of the work of the School;
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade, as directed by your Line Manager and the Dean of School.

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Good time management skills and ability to manage own workload;
  • Excellent skills in modern clinical practice appropriate to chosen discipline.

Desirable

  • Ability to use and develop appropriate IT-based teaching materials.

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Experience leading clinical service delivery in clinical veterinary practice;
  • Experience in the delivery of teambased clinical services;
  • Experience of supervision of veterinary students either within clinical practice or an educational setting;
  • Ability to establish collaborative projects;
  • Flexible approach to new methods in teaching;
  • Enthusiasm for disseminating clinical and scientific knowledge.

Desirable

  • Teaching in Higher Education;
  • Experience in tutoring and counselling of students;
  • Demonstrable teaching ability;
  • Administrative experience in an academic environment;
  • Experience of involvement in postgraduate clinical training;
  • Evidence of contribution to school/university based clinical or teaching strategy;
  • Demonstrable teaching ability.

Qualifications, certification and training (relevant to role)

Essential

  • Veterinary qualification suitable for clinical practice in the UK (registration as MRCVS);
  • Post graduate clinical qualification (e.g., clinical certificate);
  • Full driving license.

Desirble

  • Teaching qualification.
